Re: Gilbert V. Reilay,Nov 1812, NY State
The names that are pronounced Reilay, when I made a count of them in the records of the LDS, have at least 80 different spellings, which are often changed from generation to generation. My own ancestors (not in the Reilay line) were spelling it Riley in 1810, Reily in 1850, and Rielley by 1865, which it has remained until the present.
The surname of my Reilay ancestors could well have been spelled Reiley at some point. They were definitely from the Troy and Albany, New York, area and were very likely Dutch rather than Irish. Other spellings shown in various records of my ancestors are Relyea and Ralja.
If any of this ties in with your own ancestors, do let me know.
