8.Hannah Relph chr. 31 Jul. 1794 - Kirkoswald
9.William Relph chr. 26 Mar. 1799 - Kirkoswald
I assume that the facts above are correct and probably based on actual records at St. Nicholas Church in Kirkoswald.Kirkoswald and Lazonby are just about a mile distant.
NOW THIS IS WHERE THINGS GET TRICKY...
There is a marriage record for a Thomas Relph and Mary Noble at Stanwix, Cumberland England around May, 1806.The record indicates that this Thomas Relph was a parishoner at Hutton-in-the-woods (known now as Hutton-in-the-forest)which is about 10 miles from Kirkoswald.
My grandparent's notes then continue (without indication of where) with the names and baptismal dates of the following persons who are supposedly the issue of Thomas and Mary (Noble) Relph.
1. Thomas Relph chr. 1807 (no date)
2. Margaret Relph chr. 24 Apr. 1808
+Dalton Richardson (no date or place)
3. John Relph chr. 1 Aug. 1810
4. Catherine Relph chr. 1 Nov. 1812
5. Rachel Relph chr.27 Mar. 1815
6. Joseph Relph chr. 22 Sep. 1818
7. Mary Relph chr. 28 Mar. 1821
8. Hannah Relph (ends list with no date at all)
Not having access to the records or any indication where the baptisms took place we can only be certain that they are the children of a Thomas Relph whose wife was possibly named Mary.Given the probable birth years of the children they could certainly be sired by the Thomas Relph christened in Kirkoswald on 17 Apr. 1782.
We have a copy of a Thomas Relph's naturalization record. It indicates he came to the US in 1833, petitioned for citizenship on 28 Aug. 1840 and was granted citizenship 5 Sep. 1842.If this is the Thomas Relph married to Mary Noble above then some of his children could have stayed in England and some could have come to the US
I have pictures of 2 headstones from an unidentified cemetery possibly in Bellefonte, Centre, PA, USA.The stone(s)look to be early 20th century and probably placed long after the death of those commemorated.
The first is for a John Relph. It gives his title as "Father"It indicates that he died on 4 Oct. 1849.Aged 38 yrs, 3 mos, 4 days.If this date and age is correct he would have been born on 30 Jun 1811...which makes him about a year too young to be the son of Thomas Relph and Mary Noble married in Stanwix in 1806.
My grandparent's note continue with John and Jane Relph's children as:
1. William Relph b. 19 July 1839 - Bellefonte, PA
d. 19 Sep. 1908 - Cedar Bluffs, Kansas, USA
+Rebecca Jane Adams b. 7 Mar. 1844 - Lafayette, IN
d. 24 Feb. 1934 - McCook, Red Willow, NE
married 1 Jan. 1861 - Wea Planes, IN
2. Mary Relph (no dates or places)
3. Margaret Relph (no dates or places)
4. Catherine Relph (no dates or places)
5. John Relph (no dates and places)
6. Joseph Relph (no dates or places)
John married an unknown "Jane" sometime before 1839 and died about ten years after the birth of his first child.
On the reverse of this stone there are four names listed:
Catherine Relph Died in her 28th Year.
Thomas Relph Died in his 59th Year.
Mary Relph his Wife Died November 5, 1854 Aged 79 years 9 months.
Joseph Relph Died in his 28th Year.
Starting with Mary her birth month and year would have been around Feb. 1775.Which would mean that if she was the bride of Thomas Relph in 1806 she would have been about 31 years old, began bearing children at 32 and had children as well past her 46th year.
Thomas her husband died in his 59th year.We know that he became a citizen in 1842.Which means he had to be born after 1783 (if his age at death is accurate.)Family "notes" keep referring back to a year of death of 1847.If this is so then he had to have been born around 1788 making him about 22 years at the time of his marriage (if he is the husband of Mary Noble) and 13 yars her junior. But this makes him 6 years too young to be the Thomas Relph of Kirkoswald.
Catherine Relph and Joseph Relph could be either John Relph's sister and brother or his daughter and son as he had both siblings and children with those names.
CONCLUSIONS I CAN MAKE:
1.IT IS PROBABLE THAT MY ANCESTOR THOMAS RELPH IS NOT THE THOMAS RELPH CHRISTENED IN 1782 IN KIRKSOSWALD, THE SON OF THOMAS RELPH AND MARGARET DIXON.
2.MY ANCESTOR JOHN RELPH MAY, OR MAY NOT, BE THE CHILD OF THOMAS RELPH AND MARY NOBLE
3.IT IS POSSIBLE THAT MY ANCESTOR THOMAS RELPH MARRIED MARY NOBLE.IT IS ALSO POSSIBLE THAT THEY ARE BOTH AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT PAIR OF THOMAS AND MARY RELPHS.
Does anyone have anything else on this line of Relphs?
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
