MILLIE JANE MATTOX REMER, 98, of Danville, Ark., died Sunday, Aug. 3, 2003.She was born Dec. 7, 1904, in Burlington, Kan., a daughter of JASON and LORA MATTOX.In 1927, she was married to DONALD REMER, who died in August 1994.
Mrs. Remer was the only girl among five siblings.After several years in college, she taught all ages in the Ottumwa, Kan., one-room school.She rode a horse for transportation.She met her husband at his brother Milton’s farm near Burlington.
They owned and operated the only store in Sharp, Kan.The store burned during the Depression in the 1930s.
The family moved to El Dorado Springs (MO) in 1935.She was a teacher and superintendent of the Christian school.In the 1950s, she moved to Sedalia, where she taught at a school for the handicapped for several years.
Deciding to retire in Blue Ball, Ark., she and her husband bought four acres adjoining their son’s land.Her husband and son built a two-story log cabin.
She was active in AARP, Order of the Eastern Star, Masonic chapters and with senior citizens.She wrote a memories column for the local paper called “From These Hills” for several years.She moved to Mitchell’s Nursing Home in Danville a few years ago.
Surviving are two daughters, Gretchen Demby of Olathe, Kan., and Donna Jane Stewart of Kansas City; five grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.She was predeceased by a son, Jack Jason; a grandson Thomas Adam; and a great-granddaughter, Windy.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Little Egypt Church in Blue Ball.Burial will be in the Little Egypt Cemetery.The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Martins Funeral Home in Waldron, Ark.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the charity of the donor’s choice.(end)
