Jacques / Jacob Remy 1630-1721 - 1st Wife- NOT
Jacques / JacobRemy 1630-1721 France to Westmoreland Co.,VA.
* Much credit in past has given Jacob's 1st wife as Francoise Haldat ...don't think this is true.
* see message #226 for proof she was NOT wife.
* other opinion that she was not..:From book:
CAVALIERS & PIONEERS 1623-1666 Vol. 1, pg. 301:
John Drayton ...transported 40 persons to VA Colony..one being "FRA. RAM. (or Rain).
True this was dated 1654..right time frame; location was in Westmoreland...right spot
Thus folks jump that this is Francoise (Haldat) Remy, wife of Jacob Remy...again I don't think so.
Oneemotional viewpoint...Jacob fled France due to Catholic persecution to Germany, then to England ...a young man fleeing with young wife to simply stay alive, works hard to travel to England in hopes of finding a way to the "Colonies" (America).Who in their right mind would separate from their spouse to travel to the Colonies in such a scary adventure??
Jacob Remy signed Indentured Servant contract with his sponsor/Master...Nicholas Spencer...a man who supported "slavery" in every way possible.Spencer transported hundreds of "Indentured Servants to work his lands ...I wouldn't think there would be a problem in bringing a "couple" to the Colonies to where Jacob would need to separate from his wife.( But I don't think Jacob had "a wife" to worry about, thus he signed up for 7 years and off to the Colonies he went).
Something to think about.Jim Carver
