John Thomas Rentsch
IÕm searching for the ancestors of John Thomas Rentsch.
My grandfather was Wilmer Lee Wildman, b. 1 Dec. 1913, in Martin County, Ind., d. 12 June 1986, in Lawrence County, Ind. He was illegitimate, and he always maintained he never knew who his father was. Later in life, he said he didnÕt want to know. At least one of WilmerÕs half-brothers was merciless in his treatment of my grandfather Ñ because he was illegitimate Ñ and it made my grandfather a bitter old man.
My uncle spoke with one of my great-grandmotherÕs classmates, and the old woman told him that WilmerÕs father was John Thomas Rentsch.
All contact welcome.

According to the official records at the Martin County Heath Department, John Thomas Rentsch and Edith May Wildman had a son, Wilmer Wildman, on 7 Dec. 1913. (WilmerÕs birth may have been recorded as 7 Dec. 1913, but it was always celebrated Dec. 1.)
I have no idea why Wilmer would say that he never knew who his father was. Surely, he had to have a birth certificate to register for Social Security.
The old woman my uncle spoke with said my great-great-grandfather forbid a marriage between John and Edith because John was Catholic and the Wildmans were Church of Christ. The old woman also said John periodically gave Edith money until she married on 9 Dec. 1919, and she added that John never married.
John Thomas Rentsch was living with his mother, Margaret Cassagne, and step-father, Louis J. Stahl, in Center Township, Martin County, Ind., according to the 1910 Census. Margaret would have been born about 1875 because she was 35 during the 1910 Census. Also according to that Census, Margaret and her parents were all born in Illinois, and John and his father were born in Indiana. Additionally, the 1910 Census indicates Margaret had one other child living at that time.
Where in Illinois was Margaret (Cassagne) Rentsch Stahlborn?
Frederick William August Rentsch and Margaret Cassagne were married 15 July 1890, by the vicar of St. JohnÕs Church, Francis H. Gavisk, priest. (The church, now known as Saint John the Evangelist Catholic Church, still stands at 126 W. Georgia St., Indianapolis.)
Frederick William August Rentsch and Margaret (Cassagne) Rentsch had a child born on 17 July 1891, in Marion County (Indianapolis), but I donÕt know anything else about that child.
Was this the child indicated on the 1910 Census? S/he would have been about 19.
Margaret (Cassagne) Rentsch was married 9 Nov. 1898, at St. JohnÕs Church to Louis J. Stahl. The marriage record indicates she was a Catholic widow, but the church has no records for FrederickÕs death.
Where in Indiana was Frederick William August Rentsch born? When and where did he die? Who were his parents?
Also the marriage record at the City/County Building could be construed to indicate Margaret had two marriages before she married Louis.
John Thomas Rentsch was living in Indianapolis on 5 June 1917, when he registered for the draft. His date of birth is listed on his draft card Ñ 14 March 1874.
Where in Indiana was John Thomas Rentsch born? And when and where did he die?
John Thomas Rentsch was living with his step-father Louis J. Stahl on the 1930 Census of Marion County. However, his mother, Margaret, is not listed.
When and where did Margaret (Cassagne) Rentsch Stahl die?
Margaret CassagneÕs parents are listed as Francis and Delia (Kellog) Cassagne on a W.P.A. Marriage Transcript.
When and where in Illinois were Francis and Delia (Kellog) Cassagne born? When and where did they die? Who were their parents?
