I don't think Ensign Vernon Rexford was born in Wales.According to my files he was born August 15, 1834 in Woodstock, Ontario (Canada West) which is probably where his mother Charity Brown was born. His father John L. Rexford was born in Steuben County, New York in 1806.He married Charity Ann Brown in Canada. The Rexfords are a very old family in America -- descended from Arthur Rexford of Dartmouth, England who came to America about 1700.The family lived for many years in the New Haven, Connecticut area. The father of the two brothers who came to Oregon -- William Dows Rexford and John Letts Rexford -- was Dr. John S. Rexford born in New York, probably Steuben County.John Letts Rexford was Ensign Vernon Rexford's father.(There was another Ensign Rexford, brother to my gr-gr-grandmother Laura Ann Rexford, who married Amanda Wylie Farmer and moved to Texas. These cousins were named for an uncle.)
1)"Genealogical History of Arthur Rexford, a native of England, who married Elizabeth Stevens, in 1702", a compilation by John DeWitt Rexford, 1891, Gazette Printing Company, Janesville, Wisconsin.
2)"Rexford Family History," Joy Deal Lehmann, 1989, The Anundsen Publishing Company, Decorah, Iowa
(Both the above are in the Library of Congress)
There is another researcher who has expanded on the John DeWitt Rexford book but I don't know if he has published his findings other than privately.
Ms. Lehmann's book has all the information that I know on the Oregon lines with the exception of my own ancestress, Laura Ann Rexford Bennett, who at the time the book was published was presumed to have died before 1870.I now know that is not the case -- Laura was divorced in 1870, moved to California, and last I have been able to find out was still living past 1880, having married a man named "Murray."
I'd be interested in seeing the biographical sketch of Ensign Vernon.
