S. C. TURNBO's book of recollections is online at the above link, and a keyword search found two web links containing stories told to TURNBO by David GAROUTTE, a resident of Keystone, Indian Territory. (Later to become Oklahoma in 1907. Go Sooners!) I hope his descendants see this, as it is what any genealogist prays to find: an account that makes an ancestor come "alive" in our imagination.
He speaks of his colorful youth in Green County, Missouri:
His parents were Samuel GAROUTTE and Jane REYNOLDS, early pioneers of Gasconade County, Missouri. Mr. Garoutte also mentions marrying Louisa Jane SMART at Billings, Missouri in 1868, and they had five children. Louisa died in Tulsa. Mr. Turnbo (or the typist!) puts her death in 1855, but her tombstone says 1895. With an 1840 birthdate, I'm inclined to believe her tombstone is the accurate date. (Her tombstone's photo is at Virtual Cemetery on this server)
Some other names mentioned: George W. KEELY, Royal HARLETON, Edward & Nellie BLADE, Dr CHENNEWORTH, Alexander OWEN, Joseph BUCHANAN, Magruder TANNIHILL, A. G. ROBERTSON, Warren CHRISTOPHER, Rebecca BATSON, and Tennessee CHRISTOPHER.
