Hi, I am posting this in hope that someone will be able to make a connection of some sort for me to the subject family names. On my maternal grandfather's side here is my lineage:
George Walter Riddle, Sr. son of
James Franklin Riddle, son of
Lewis G. Riddle and Fanny Rhodes Riddle, who made their home in Augusta County, VA, Mt. Sydney area.
According to the marriage record for Lewis and Fanny, which I found in Greene County records, they were married there on February 2, 1847.The record showed these parents names:
Lewis' parents were shown as James Riddle and Mary .....
Fanny's parents were shown as Clifton Rhodes and Betsy Walker (I wondered if this was Waller, but it was written as Walker.)(I have seen some records on the Net which show the name as Waller, but the writing was very clear on the marriage record as being Walker.)I think the confusion here might me that there was another Clifton Rhodes (Rodes/Rhoades) a generation back who married a Sarah Waller, I believe some researchers have mixed/confused the two.
Now to my question. My grandfather, Walter Riddle, lived to just two months short of 100, and his mind and body were still sound.Unfortunately, I got interested in genealogy too late to obtain pertinent information from him or any of my other ancestors. His family Bible had been burned when his home caught fire, and much valuable information was lost, with regard to family history. However, in a short conversation re family he had told me:"My grandparents were Lewis Riddle and Fanny, from Augusta County, VA.My father had brothers named John and Tabner and a sister, Molly, who married a Drumheller."(My research showed other children born to Lewis and Fanny, but they died within a short period of each other, apparently in a diphtheria epidemic.)
He went on to tell me why his father came to western Virginia.I was driving when we were discussing this and thought we would get back to it at a time when I could write down more detailed information. He passed away shortly thereafter, before I could get into more detail with him about this.I did ask him a question, to which I had scribbled down his answer, which was "Rhodes and then Reynolds."I specifically remember asking him what his grandmother Riddle's maiden name was and he aid, "Rhodes."I cannot remember if the next question was, "What was Fanny's mother's maiden name? or, What was Lewis' mother's maiden name?"Since I later found Fanny's parents as Clifton Rhodes and Betsy Walker, one has to assume the name Reynolds was the maiden name of the Mary, who was shown as the mother of James Riddle.Of course, this is conjecture on my part.I could have asked what Fanny's mother's maiden name was, but that is unlikely.Iespecially doubt that is what I asked, especially in light of the fact I now know Betsy's maiden name was Walker.
I have yet to find a marriage of a female Reynolds to a Riddle (or any variation of spelling of that name), but need to search in more depth.HOWEVER, the printed list of the 1860 Federal Census for Orange County showed a Richard H. Reynolds, household #604, no township listed. Also shown for that household #604, was Callett (Catlett?) Rhodes. At least this is one Rhodes/Reynolds connection.
There were three Richard Reynolds' on the 1850 Census:
Richard in Isle of Wight, Richard H. in Culpepper, and Richard M. in Fluvanna.I have yet to check into these.
Elsewhere on the Reynolds Family Forum, I find reference to the name Dickenson in connection with Reynolds. In the area where my grandfather grew up, and where his father, of course, settled, there were Reynolds and Dickenson (Dickinson) families. My mother once told me, "Pop (my grandfather) is related to the Reynolds and Dickenson families some way."
I found a record of a marriage of a Theodosia Rhodes to a James Riddle, but no Mary...... to a James Riddle.HELP!
If anyone has any information as to the last name of the Mary who married James Riddle, father of Lewis, I would appreciate hearing from you.Or, if someone can provide informtion which would help me make a connection between these families in some way, I would appreciate hearing from you.My email, should you prefer to correspond that way, is CharlotteThurston@msn.com.
