Hello Cousin John,
I can help you with the answers you seek. This will be long, but by posting the information here, it may help someone else as well.
I have two books in my possession which document the relationship between the families. The first is entitled, "The Story of an American Family" by Stephen B. Barnwell. The other is the genealogy of the "Descendants of Col. William Rhett of South Carolina" by Barnwell Rhett Heyward (which was published in the South Carolina Historical and Genealogical Magazine, Vol. IV).
The first book offers an in-depth look at the relationship and explains precisely the connection between the families through their Barnwell connections. The second is merely a genealogical account of the families connected to the Rhett lines. Both the Stuarts and the Walkers "marry into" the Rhett family through the same generation.
To begin, I will approach the "connection" from the Rhett family vantage point.Afterwards, I will "backtrack" and show the earlier connections between the above families, through the "Barnwell" family.I believe it may be somewhat easier to follow that way.
There is a direct connection between the Stuarts, the Walkers and the Rhetts in the generation in which the six sons of James and Mariana (Gough) SMITH changed their surname to Rhett in honor of their great-grandfather, Col. William RHETT, whose name had died out in this country. The Smith brothers petitioned the court to legally change their surname in 1838, following the death of their father.Their petition was granted and the name Rhett was once again "introduced" as Thomas Moore Smith became Thomas Moore Rhett (my 3rd great-grandfather), James Hervey Smith became James Smith Rhett, Benjamin Smith became Benjamin Smith Rhett, Robert Barnwell Smith became Robert Barnwell Rhett, Edmund Smith became Edmund Rhett, and Albert Moore Smith became Albert Moore Rhett. The Rhett brothers had several sisters who opted NOT to legally change their names from Smith to Rhett, as it was understood that their names would change once they married. Two of these sisters are the topic of our discussion - as one married a Stuart and the other married a Walker (well, actually, two unrelated fellows by the name of Walker). One of the Rhett brothers (Edmund) married a Stuart and will be discussed here as well.
Mariana Smith (b. Nov. 9, 1799), the eldest (surviving) Smith sister was actually the fourth daughter and seventh child born to James Smith and Mariana Gough. On Jan. 8, 1823, Mariana Smith married Julius Henry Walker. From this first marriage, Mariana had two daughters, Emma Smith Walker and Eliza Magdalen - neither daughter married or had issue. On Apr. 22, 1830 in Beaufort, Mariana married a second time - to Rev. Joseph Rogers Walker, D.D. (no relation to her first husband, Julius).Rev. Walker (b. 5/22/1796 in Uniontown, PA, was the rector of St. Helena's Episcopal Church in Beaufort where the couple lived.Mariana was Joseph Walker's second wife. They had four children: Ellen Walker (b. 7/13/1834; d. 6/5/1838); Edmund Rhett Walker (b. 7/13/1836, d. 9/30/1891, married Jane Lewis Perkins on 3/18/1863, had issue;Albert Rhett Walker (b. 8/28/1839, d. 7/17/1898, married (1) Mary Eliza Boone on 10/9/1862, had issue, and (2) Susan Hunter on 9/25/1902; and Josephine Rogers Walker (b. 10/13/1841, d. 5/23/1899, married Robert Means Fuller on 11/10/1859, had issue.Rev. Walker died 4/2/1879 (four months after his retirement) while visiting his son Edmund in Baltimore. Both Dr. Walker and Mariana, who predeceased him (on 2/26/1866), are buried in St. Helena's Churchyard in Beaufort.
Claudia Smith (b. 8/1/1802), the second eldest "surviving" daughter was actually born the Smith's 5th daughter and 8th child. On 12/9/1823, Claudia married her cousin (degree of relationship explained later) John Allan Stuart (see below for particulars).John Allan Stuart and Claudia Smith hadtwelve children: James Reeve Stuart (b. 7/12/1825, d. 6/18/1851), never married; John Allan Stuart (b. 2/20/1827, d. 8/14/1828); Julius Henry Walker Stuart (b. 9/30/1828, d. 11/9/1856), he was engaged to marry his cousin, Anne Barnwell Fuller, daughter of Dr. Thomas Fuller; Thomas Middleton Stuart (b. 6/15/1830, d. 9/27/1873), married Josephine Maria Cay on 11/29/1859, had four children; Claudia Smith Stuart (b. 6/1/1832, d. 5/7/1875), married Dr. Charles Robert Thomson on 4/9/1860, had three children who all died in infancy; John Allan Stuart (b. 2/19/1834, d. 3/21/1836); Benjamin Rhett Stuart (b. 5/8/1835, d. 5/28/1904), married Emma Virginia Thomson on 5/1/1860.Emma's brother Charles had married Benjamin's sister Claudia three weeks before.Benjamin and Emma hadten children; Emma Smith Stuart (b. 12/31/1836, d. 4/30/1840); Eliza Smith Stuart (b. 11/18/1838, d. 5/14/1840); Barnwell Smith Stuart (b. 8/16/1840, d. 3/10/1869), married Emma Croom Lee on 12/12/1863, had three children; Edmund Rhett Stuart (b. 10/16/1842, d. 8/26/1862), never married; Albert Rhett Stuart (b. 4/1/1846, d. 2/24/1902), married Harriet Sophia Clarkson and had seven children. This Albert Rhett Stuart was your 2nd great-grandfather, which places us in the same generation.
Edmund Rhett (b. 3/13/1808, d. 2/15/1863), the fifth "surviving" son (7th son and 13th child born to James Smith and Mariana Gough) married his cousin (2nd cousins once removed) Mary Williamson Stuart on 3/10/1842 in Beaufort.Mary was the daughter of Dr. Thomas Middleton Stuart and his wife, Mary Anne Williamson (daughter of John Garnier Williamson and widow of John Alexander Cuthbert).Edmund Rhett and Mary Stuart had four children: Thomas Middleton Stuart Rhett (b. 1/22/1844, d. aft. 1907), never married; Edmund Rhett (b. 9/1/1845, d. 7/31/1852); Anne Stuart Rhett (b. 12/13/1846, d. 2/21/1918), married her 3rd cousin Middleton Stuart Elliot on 7/9/1867 and had six children; and Mary Williamson Rhett (b. 11/10/1849, d. 9/5/1901), married Dr. Benjamin Harrison Kidder, USN on 1/25/1881 at St. Helena's in Beaufort. They had no children.
As you can see, the Barnwell connection is prevalent in all these "intermarriages."
The first marriage between the Stuart and the Barnwell clans took place in Beaufort, SC on December 28, 1752, when Anne REEVE (b. Mar. 12, 1735 in Beaufort), eldest daughter of Dr. Ambrose REEVE and Anne BARNWELL (daughter of Col. John "Tuscarora Jack" Barnwell and Anne Berners of Beaufort) married Francis STUART (b. abt. 1728 in Inverness, Scotland), a son of "Bailie" John Stuart of Inverness and his second wife, Christian McLeod (daughter of Norman McLeod of Brynoch, Scotland).Francis (known as Frank) came to Carolina in late 1748 to manage a branch office of the family mercantile business.Frank and Anne Stuart had only one child who survived infancy, James Stuart, who became a doctor and was the ancestor of the Beaufort Stuarts.
Dr. James STUART (above) (b. Mar. 8, 1760 in Beaufort) married his second cousin, Anne MIDDLETON (b. Dec. 18, 1766, the day following her father's death) on May 18, 1785, in Beaufort.Anne was the daughter of Colonel Thomas MIDDLETON (son of Gov. Arthur Middleton and Sarah Amory) and his second wife Anne BARNWELL (daughter of Col. Nathaniel Barnwell & his wife Mary Woodward Gibbes).Col. Nathaniel Barnwell was the brother of Anne Barnwell (who married Dr. Ambrose Reeve above). Thus, Anne (Reeve) Stuart (wife of Francis Stuart) and Anne (Barnwell) Middleton (wife of Col. Thomas Middleton) were first cousins - making their "married children") second cousins.Dr. James Stuart and wife Anne Middleton
had nine children, seven of whom survived: Anne, Dr. James, Dr. Thomas Middleton, John Allan, Henry Middleton, Charlotte, and Col. Middleton Stuart.
Your ancestor (3rd great grandfather) John Allan STUART (above) was b. Mar. 16, 1800 and graduated from Princeton University in 1817.He married Claudia SMITH (b. Aug. 1, 1802) in Beaufort on Dec. 9, 1823.Claudia SMITH was the daughter of James Smith and Marianna Gough (also my 4th great-grandparents). Claudia's eldest brother, Thomas Moore RHETT and his wife, Caroline BARNWELL were my 3rd great-grandparents.John Allan Stuart, became the editor of the "Mercury" a Charleston newspaper, "a factor of great importance" in the political rise of his brother-in-law, Robert Barnwell RHETT, the "father of secession."John Allan Stuart and his wife, Claudia Smith, were 2nd cousins.
Another "Walker" connection is that of Rev. Edward Tabb WALKER, the younger orphaned brother of Rev. Joseph Rogers Walker, rector of St. Helena's in Beaufort, (b. 10/9/1818 in Uniontown, PA to Zadock Walker and Elizabeth Rogers) who married Ann Bull BARNWELL (b. 5/10/1818 in Beaufort, SC), daughter of Capt. John Gibbes Barnwell and his wife Sarah Bull, on Nov. 14, 1844.Capt. John Gibbes Barnwell was the son of General John Barnwell and Anne Hutson (daughter of Rev. William Hutson and Mary Woodward).General John Barnwell's brother *Edward Barnwell married Mary Hutson Wigg, daughter of Esther Hutson (sister of Anne above) and Maj. William Hazzard Wigg.Edward Barnwell's daughter Caroline married Thomas Moore Rhett. It was Thomas Moore Rhett's sister Mariana Smith who married the brother of Edward Walker, the Reverend Joseph Rogers Walker.Mariana Smith was the second cousin of Ann Bull Barnwell, so the two brothers married women who were second cousins.(The * indicates my line.)
Are you confused yet? It looks as though we have come full circle!I hope I have been able to provide you with some "new" information. I am always willing to share with interested cousins.
I have a few questions regarding your 2nd great-grandmother, Harriet Sophia Clarkson, wife of Albert Rhett Stuart.
1.Is Harriet Sophia Clarkson any relation to Elizabeth Clarkson of New York?Elizabeth Clarkson, daughter of David Augustus Clarkson and Margaret Livingston was married to George Gibbes Barnwell, son of William Wigg Barnwell.William Wigg Barnwell was the youngest surviving son of "my" Col. Edward Barnwell and Mary Hutson Wigg.I found a few other "Clarksons" listed in the index of Stephen B. Barnwell's book and thought I'd check with you to see if any of the names are familiar to you.The way these old families intermarried, I frankly, would be surprised if there isn't another connection here.
2.Is Harriet Sophia Clarkson related to Alexander Garden Clarkson, son of William Clarkson and Amelia Garden Pringle? Alexander Clarkson was married to Emily Barnwell Heyward, who was the daughter of Nathaniel Barnwell Heyward and Elizabeth Barnwell Smith - yet another daughter of James Smith and Mariana Gough! And yes, Nathaniel B. Heyward and his wife, Elizabeth B. Smith were 2nd cousins!
I believe there is a close connection between these Clarksons, especially now that I have compared the lists of children born to Albert Rhett Stuart and Harriet Sophia Clarkson with those of Alexander Garden Clarkson and Emily Barnwell Heyward.
The children of Albert Rhett Stuart & Harriet Sophia Clarkson:
1.William Clarkson Stuart
2.Albert Rhett Stuart
3.Claudia Stuart
4.Barnwell Smith Stuart
5.Garden Clarkson Stuart
6.Sophia Clarkson Stuart
7.Roger Moore Stuart
The children of Alexander Garden Clarkson & Emily Barnwell Heyward:
1.Sophia Stuart Clarkson
2.Nathaniel Heyward Clarkson
3.Alexander Garden Clarkson
4.Herbert Rhett Clarkson
5.William Anderson Clarkson
6.James Smith Heyward Clarkson
7.Emily Heyward Clarkson
8.Robert Barnwell Clarkson
9.Amelia Garden Clarkson
On Page 91 of the "Barnwell" book, the author suggests that George Gibbes Barnwell & Elizabeth Clarkson, (whose father was New York attorney David Augustus Clarkson) "probably met through his (George's) first cousin, John Jacob Astor, III."Robert Morgan Gibbes Barnwell was the only surviving child of George & Elizabeth.Unfortunately, there is no "clue" to a possible connection here.My curiosity is piqued.I will let you know what I discover regarding the relationship to the Astors.
I hope this information is what you were looking for and that you find it useful.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Your Cousin,
Pamela Rhett Molzan
