Hi Ed,
Yes, and we have learned that the Richersons are very very related to you Broadduses.
Let me count some of the ways!
Thomas Richerson (died 1815) was married to Eleanor Broaddus, who we believed died about 1812 when their only child was born. The child was named for her father, Reuben Broaddus.
Thomas named his brother John Richerson, John Broaddus, and Phillip Long as executors of his estate and guardian of “my little son Reuben.”Mordecai Broaddus was a witness of the will, along with Gray Samuel, and Henry Dunn Jr.
Gray Samuel married Sally, widow of Robert L. Broaddus (son of Edward the Immigrant.)
Most researchers say that John W. Broaddus was married the second time to Martha Richerson, sister to Thomas Richerson.
Mordecai Broaddus was brother of John W. Broaddus.
Lucy Richerson, Thomas’s sister, married Phillip Gatewood, in 1809.I do not know when she died but in 1819 Phillip married Mordecai Broaddus’ daughter Nancy.
Phillip Long’s wife was a Fanny Gatewood.
It appears that very soon after Thomas’s death, and we have no reason to believe with any disagreements with the original three stated guardians, that little Reuben Broaddus Richerson, orphaned at age 3, was raised by his Broaddus relations. In 1816, Reuben, Mordecai, and Thomas Broaddus were bound to the justices in Caroline County VA for $10,000 bond regarding the estate of orphan Reuben Richerson.
On my last visit to Caroline County I took photos of Broadhurst Farm, established by Rebuen Broaddus in the early 1800s.I wonder if little Reuben grew up there. In the 1820 census, Reuben Broaddus has a male age 0-10 in his household; his own youngest son would have been 12.(Have you seen Broadhurt Farm in Bowling Green?)
Lucy Garland Broaddus, little Reuben’s aunt, married Nathaniel Motley in 1820. Ten years later Nathaniel Motley signed the marriage bond when 18-year-old orphan Reuben Broaddus Richerson married 18-year-old orphan Susan Frances Saunders.
Among our many questions, is, how did the Richersons obtain Auburn Hills, the farm which little Reuben seems to have inherited from his father Thomas? It is said to have been built for nephew John by Edmund Pendleton. If the 3-year-old did inherit it, his guardians had to maintain it for him until his maturity.
Do keep in touch if you find information relevant to us, and we’ll do the same.
