Hello, Trying to locate information on the following family names, ROAKE,MCLAUGHLIN, MCGLINCHEY AND MCCARRON.
My dad was JAMES ALBERT ROAKE, JR, born July 3, 1924, St. Margaret’s Hospital, Dorchester MA, his family lived in several locations in Somerville, MA. He married MARY NICOLL WILSON of Somerville. He died September 2000, Billerica, MA.
His parents were MARY ELIZABETH (MCLAUGHLIN) ROAKEb. 1894 and JAMES ALBERT ROAKE, Daughters Helen and Mary and sons JAMES A..andWilliam.
MARY ELIZABETH MCLAUGHLIN’S parents were ELLEN (NELLIE) JAYNE (McgLINCHEY) MCLAUGHLIN born 1862? Ireland married PATRICK JOSEPH MCLAUGHLIN born on an Island in the Kennebacasis River, New Brunswick Canada. They wed October 3, 1889. Daughters MARY E.. June 1894, Helen G. January 1897 and Margaret L. August 1899, and a son Walter that was born May 1, 1893 and died July 24, 1893. Adopted daughter Anna Desjardins of Newburyport, MA through the Home for Destitute Catholic Children, Boston. She would later become a nun with the Sister’s of St. Joseph, Brighton, MA.
PATRICK JOSEPH MCLAUGHLIN born 1867 Long Island? New Brunswick to BERNARD MCLAUGHLIN and MARY MCCARRON. They had twelve children. I have no other information except that Patrick Joseph McLaughlin eventually tired of the farm in Canada and came to the Boston area working as a blacksmith and then for the Tube Works in Somerville, MA.
ELLEN JAYNE MCGLINCHEY’S parents were MARTHA THOMPSON married ANDREW MCGLINCHEY. My Aunt has Martha’s death certificate in Claudy Ireland but I’m not sure of the date of death or her birth. It was signed by her sister-in-law Jane McGlinchey. The story of this marriage was that Andrew who was Catholic worked as a coachman for Martha’s familywho were Irish Protestant.Neither families approved of the marriage and they left the families to be together. Their children were ELLEN JAYNE and Mary. They were sent to Edinburgh, Scotland for their education. Before they reached the age of twenty they boarded a ship and sailed to South America, Australia and into Boston where they found jobs working and cleaning at Massachusetts General Hospital.
On my father’s paternal side the information that I have is even less.
His father JAMES ALBERT ROAKE married MARY ELIZABETH MCLAUGHLIN. His father was JOHN FRANCIS ROAKE whose father was ROGER ROAKE. Roger Roake arrived on the ship Uriel.
JOHN FRANCIS ROAKE married ELLEN BEEGAN.
Now I’ve searched high and wide for the name ROAKE and it seems like a rare name in America, Canada and Ireland but not so in England, especially the Surry area. But I can’t prove anything and my dad is now gone so I’m just checking other sources now. I’m not even sure if the BEEGAN name is spelled right and I’m not sure where these people came from or when they were born.
Thanks for any assistance.
Linda Roake Hubley
