1850s photo of Alfred Robarts (1820-1856)
I purchased in Oakland, CA, the subject cased ambrotype portrait (image on glass) of a young man.It is identified on the back of the wooden frame in period ink handwriting:
"Revd. A Robarts
obiit. April 1st 1856
There is also a crudely drawn face (eyes, nose, and mouth) drawn on the back.
Alfred Robarts, born 1820 (baptised 16 Oct 1820) in Burnham, Buckinghamshire, England, died 1 Apr 1856 in England, was the son of a surgeon, William Robarts, and Matilda (maiden name unknown).He matriculated from Brazenose College, Oxford University, on 26 Nov 1840.He is listed in the 1841 England Census (resided as a student at Brazenose College, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England; and the 1851 England Census for Burnham (resided as a visitor on a farm), Buckinghamshire, England.On 22 May 1847, in England, Alfred married Eliza Glover Moore.The couple had two children: Alfred George Arthur Robarts (1849-1916) and Laura May Robarts (1850-).Alfred and his son were both clergyman.His son served in many posts in India from 1876 to 1897.On 12 Feb 1876, Alfred George Arthur Robarts married Mary Chapman.The couple had two children: Violet Agnes Robarts (1876-1962) and Hilda Glover M. Robarts (1884-1970).
