Parents of Elizabeth Stevens, Wife of Hardin Robbins
The parents of Elizabeth Stevens Robbins has not heretofore been forthcoming. The 1840 Federal Census for Sand Creek (and other locales), Decatur County, Indiana, indicated that a Thomas Stevens was the head of household and close neighbor to Hardin Robbins. The age grouping for this Thomas Stevens suggested that he was born between 1791 and 1800. He was of an age to have been the father of Elizabeth Stevens, wife of neighbor, Hardin Robbins. Further research in Decatur County into probate and land records was indicated and might prove a relationship between Elizabeth Stevens and Thomas Stevens, her neighbor in 1840.
Also in the 1850 Federal Census for the same community as above, there was an Adam Robbins listed as neighbor to Hardin Robbins. Adam was Hardin's brother and Adam had married Mary Stevens. It was likely that Adam and Hardin Robbins had married Stevens sisters and since proximity was an important factor in finding a spouse in this era, the hypothesis that Thomas Stevens was the father of Elizabeth and Mary Stevens was a strong one and ought be pursued.
By the time of the 1850 census, either Thomas Stevens had removed to another community or had died. There was a Thomas Stephens (Stevens) listed in Huntington County, Indiana, to the north of Decatur County, in the 1860 census with his wife Susannah. Of interest was the fact that this Thomas Stephens was born in 1791; he died in 1869 [see the Find A Grave website]. 1791 was the approximate year that Thomas Stevens of Sand Creek in the 1840 census may have been born.
This information is submitted for those who are able to continue the research into the conundrum concerning the parents of Hardin Robbins's wife, Elizabeth Stevens, born in Ohio (perhaps) in 1816. For the record, Hardin Robbins and Elizabeth Stevens were married in June of 1836 in Decatur County, Indiana. Both were buried in the Jolly Cemetery, Breckinridge County, Kentucky.
