Obit for Catherine ROBERTS widow of Eleazer MONROE
Catherine ROBERTS was the widow of Eleazer Joslyn MONROE. Eleazer was born 11 Aug 1802 at Pembroke, Plymouth, Mass. and died 21 Apr 1847 at Preston, Wayne County, Penn. He is buried Wheeler Hill Cemetery, Mount Pleasant, Wayne, Pennsylvania, near his parents, Joseph MONROE and Mary JOSLYN.
His widow's obituary appeared in The Wayne Independent (Wayne County, Pa) newspaper of 28 September 1882:
"The Sedan, (Kansas) Journal, of the 22d inst., notes the death, at the residence of her son-in-law, S. N. Stearns, Sept. 18th, of Mrs. Catherine Monroe, relict of E. J. Monroe, in the 83rd year of her age. Deceased was a native of this county and lived many years in the town of Mt. Pleasant. She removed to Kansas before the lands there were surveyed by the government, and there was among the first settles in that region of the West. The first wife of A. G. Forbes was a daughter of the deceased."
Catherine and Eleazer MONROE had children:
Lyman b. Apr 1828 d. 08 Sep 1850 (Tombstone of Lyman Monroe)
Mary Joslyn b. 13 Oct 1830 (Secondary source -- The Monroe Book, p. 450)
Ellen b. about 1834 (U.S. Census, Pennsylvania, Wayne Co., Preston Township 1850. p. 31)
Eleazer Joslyn b. abt. 1839 (U.S. Census, Pennsylvania, Wayne Co., Preston Township 1850. p. 31)
Jonathan b. abt. 1843 (U.S. Census, Pennsylvania, Wayne Co., Preston Township 1850.p. 31)
I believe Catherine's father may have been Daniel ROBERTS, as a person of that name and appropriate age was a resident of Wayne County, PA when Catherine was living there.
