Hello my fellow rooters:
I am wondering if any of you may by any chance have a copy or abstract of this 1727 will of Nicholas Robinson.
My interest comes from finding the below deed, during my research of BURTONs in Northumberland Co, VA.
3/9/1742: John Robison Gilbert, Thomas Gilbert, % John Burton (Burtan) & Sarah his wife, formerly Sarah Gilbert, dau of Mary Gilbert, all of NC, sold to Peter Presly, of St. Stephen's Parish, Northumberland Co, for 30 pds, their right & Title to a tract of land in St. Stephen's Parish, bounded by the main branch of Herring Creek, Beaver...[illegible]...the same being parcel of James Ashton's patent formerly of this county, being 340 acres & devised to sd John Robison Gilbert, Thomas Gilbert & Sarah, wife of John Burton by will of Nicholas Robison , decd, ...Wits: Robert Jones, James Daughity, John Corbell, Edward Rogers, Daniel Cottrell. Recorded in Northumberland Co, VA Deeds, Wills, Inventories, Etc. 1737-1743, page 160.
And then I found these:
11/10/1718: Mr. Nicholas Robinson, of Northumberland Co, is in possession of land granted James Ashton who assigned to Francis Roberts 5 Nov 1670, who assigned to Ralph Waddington 10 Oct 1671 who assigned to Robinson. 486 acres (300 acres previously granted & 186 acres surplus) granted Robinson. Surv. Mr. John Coppedge. In St. Stephen's Parish in said county, adj. William Gilbert, Little Wiccomocoe River, Herring Creek, Robinson's line, Courtnal's old field, Capt. Thomas Hobson. Recorded in Virginia Northern Neck Land Grant Book 5, page 182.
Per book "Virginia Northern Neck Land Grants, 1694-1742, Volume 1" compiled by Gertrude E. Gray, page 067.
From Volume 1 of "Virginia Colonial Abstracts" by Beverly Fleet.
Register of St. Stephen's Parish, Northumberland Co, VA
page 056: Sarah Gilberd, daug'r to Mary, born Jan'y 7, 1718.
.................John Robinson Gilbert, son to Mary, born Ap'l 28, 1721
.................Tho's Gilbert, son to Mary, born Aug't 20, 1724
I find it strange that no father is mentioned for all three Gilbert children, only their mother Mary. Was Mary never married? And was there any relationship to William Gilbert, who was a neighbor of Nicholas Robinson in 1718? What was to relationship of Nicholas Robinson to these three Gilbert children, that they are heirs in his 1727 will. Sometime between 1727 and 1742, Mary Gilbert and her three children left Northumberland Co and migrated to NC. So far, I have been unable to locate them in NC.
I would be most grateful for any incites you can provide.
