Herbert S. Rolfes, Sr. of East Helena passed away early Tuesday morning April 24, 2007 at the Veterans Administrations Medical Center at Ft. Harrison, MT.He was 86.
Herbert S. Rolfes, Sr. was born on May 31, 1920 in Iona, MN.He served in the Army during WWII from 1942-1945.During the summer of 1945 he was chosen to serve as an honor guard for President Truman in a parade in Independence, Missouri, and then as an honor guard for General Eisenhower in a parade in Abilene, Kansas.While stationed in Kansas, Herbert met his future wife, Rella Nelson.They were married on August 14, 1945 (V-J Day).The couple settled in Lincoln, Nebraska where their three children were born.In 1957, Herbert moved his family to Slayton, MN where he later opened and operated Herb's Standard Oil Service Station.In 1973, Herbert and Rella moved to Hartford, SD where they operated a Standard Oil Service Station in Sioux Falls.In 1981, they moved to Canistota, SD where they owned and operated The Starlite Motel.In 1985, they retired and moved back to Hartford, SD.In 1997, Herbert and Rella moved to East Helena, MT.
Herbert was preceded in death by his parents, Anna and William Rolfes of Iona, MN; brothers, Cornelius, Eugene, Francis, and William Jr.; sister, Marcelene Preston and infant sister, Leonilla.
Herbert is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Rella Rolfes of Helena, daughters and sons-in-law, Katherine and Wayne Coleman of Springfield, VA and Marlene and Frank Jump of Seattle, WA; son Herbert Rolfes, Jr. of Helena; grandson, Matthew Coleman of Springfield, VA; granddaughters, Genevieve Coleman of Springfield, VA, and Margaret Jump of Seattle, WA; sisters, Ursula Kellen of Iona, MN, and Leona Edwards of Federal Way, WA.
A funeral Mass was held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 27 at Sts. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church.Interment with military honors at the Montana State Veterans Cemetery at Ft. Harrison.
