There is a good genealogy site for the Isle of Man at http://www.bigenealogy.com/location/man.htmhttp://www.bigenealogy.com/location/man.htm
They describe the Island status as: "The Isle of Man is not part of the United Kingdom but rather is a crown possession (since 1828) that is self-governing in its internal affairs under the supervision of the British Home Office".
The IOM would probably never describe itself as part of England, so if he and his father gave their place of birth as England, they were unlikely to mean the IOM.
The website provides many listings from their parish registers and directories. I've done a brief search, though not comprehensive, and not found a single Rolston/Rolleston reference. I suggest that you check the site and search it completely, just in case one is found there somewhere.
But it doesn't look too promising.
