Hello Paul,
I'm new to this forum, and posted my first message yesterday. Your great grandfather, George Frederick, may well be one of my family. Briefly, my George Frederick was the second of five children, and the oldest son of George Roughton and Miriam Bettis. He was born in Romford, Essex, on 7 Jun 1875. My knowledge of him ends there! His brother, Charles Sydney, born 21 Feb 1879, is my grandfather.Charles married and emigrated to NZ in 1908. I'll be pleased to hear whether or not we're linked.
If our George Fredericks are one and the same person, then his father, John, married Eliza Muffin on 24 October 1845 at Elm, Cambridgeshire. Does this sound familiar?
I've read that the name Roughton is of Scandinavian origin, and means 'rye-town'. There are two villages named Roughton - one near Cromer in Norfolk, the other in Lincolnshire.
Regards,
Carrol
