Recollections of Early Texas
Memoirs of John Holland Jenkins Edited by John Holmes Jenkins III
Foreword by J. Frank Dobie
Chapter 1 Austin's Little Colony
This summer (1829) marked the coming of some of the first settlers of West Texas, now known as Bastrop County. Martin Wells came from Alabama, and was the first man who settled where the town of Bastrop now stands. Then, too, one Moses Rousseau stayed a week with us, and then moving on settled first and alone west of the Colorado River on the Old San Antonio Road, opposite Bastrop
TANNEHILL, JESSIE CORNELIUS (1797-1863). Jessie Cornelius Tannehill, early settler, was born in Kentucky on December 30, 1797. He was married to Jane Richardson in 1823 near Nashville, Tennessee. They came to Texas with their two children in 1827 and settled near Caney in Matagorda County. In the latter part of 1828 or early in 1829 they moved to Bastrop County, locating near the Old San Antonio Road at the river crossing. After the town of Bastrop was laid out, Jessie Tannehill purchased five acres of land and built one of the first houses there.
Little is known of the family from 1829 to 1836. Tannehill acquired the title of "judge," and records show that on November 7, 1831, he was defeated by one vote for the office of síndico procurador by Moses Rousseau.
In the early spring of 1836, when invading Mexican forces threatened the settlements along the Colorado, the Tannehills, along with other families, fled in their wagons along the Old San Antonio Road.
William Cannon of Balstrop Co., Texas
William R. Cannon: When his father, William Cannon and older brother Charles Cannon left Alabama in 1835, they left William R. and the homestead in the care of Alice K. Cannon.
The father, William Cannon returned to Alabama in 1839 and moved his wife and son to the Republic of Texas.
After settling his father's estate William R.Cannon moved to Hays County, Texas. He married Maria L. Rousseau, daughter of Moses Rousseau. They had two sons: William Cannon, born ca 1850 and Charles R. Cannon, born ca 1856. On 14 February 1874 in Hays County, Texas a William Cannon and C. R. Cannon deeded to Franks, W. L. & J. N. Goforth, W. J. (Deed Book "I" page 452. I assume these are the sons of William R. Cannon and Maria Rousseau Cannon.

According documented history (1) (5) and family memoirs (2) (3) Hills Prairie which is four miles south of Bastrop in central Bastrop County was named for my ancestor Abram Wylie Hill
Wylie Hill was so thoroughly infatuated with life in this new land that he determined to cast his lot with these other adventurous souls.
He bought 2220 acres of land from Mrs. Sarah Jenkins, widow of Edward Jenkins after Jenkins had been scalped and murdered either by Indians or, as rumored by a half slave half Indian, as revenge for his killing Moses Rousseau in a knife fight (5) (6).
The date of the transaction as recorded is July 7, 1835, State of Coahuila, Dept. of Brazos, Jurisdiction of Mina, in the Colony of Stephen F. Austin.

On June 24, 1845, Rufus Perry and Margaret Ann Rousseau were married in Bastrop. Her father, Mosea (or Mozea) Rouseeau, had been killed by Edward Jenkins, father of John Holland Jenkins. The following year Edward Jenkins was murdered. He was found by friends beneath a large pecan tree, in a cornfield, and had been scalped.John Holmes Jenkins III, a descendant of Edward Jenkins and John Holland Jenkins, has written as follows in his book Recollections of Early Texas: This was indeed a most mysterious murder.According to family legend, Jenkins was killed by the half-Negro, half-Indian slave of Moses Rousseau.Edward jenkins had killed Rousseau in a knife fight a year before and there are no records of Jenkins every being brought to trial.

WILL OF JOHN ROUSSEAU
Source: Columbia Co. Wills Written: September 5, 1796Will of John Rousseau In the name of God Amen. I John Rousseau, of Columbia County and the state of Georgia, being low and weak in sickness but in perfect senses and sound in memory in calling to mind it is appointed for all men to die do make this my Last Will and Testament in manner following. In the first place, I leave my soul to God who gave it to me and as for what worldly estate it hath pleased God to bless me with, I do give and bequeath in the manner following. Item:I do lend unto my wife Jane during her widowhood one Negro wench named Patience and one Negro fellow Will. The said fellow it is my will and desire that my executors sell him and the money of such saleto the amount of 40 pounds to take it to Jacob Castleberry to redeem a Negro boy pawned by me for 40 pounds to the said Castleberry which time is out the 10th of January next, and if the said boy should be redeemed, I lend him the said boy named Jacob to my wife Jane during her widowhood. Item:I also lend unto my wife Jane during herwidowhood two featherbeds and my household furniture that belongs to me, and my cattle, hogs, horses, working tools and plantation tools and utensils. Item:I do will and bequeath to my daughter Margaret one Negro girl named Bett and one feather bed and furniture. Item:I do will and bequeath to my daughter Nancy one Negro boy named Tom, the said Negro girl named Bett and the said Negro boy Tom to be delivered to my two daughters any time after twelve months from date. Item:I do will and bequeath to my daughter Betty one Negro boy named Jerry to be delivered at any time after three years from this date. Item:I do will and bequeath to my daughter Sarah one Negro boy named John to be delivered her my said daughter any time after she arrives to the age of seventeen years old.I do will to my said daughters after the decease or marriage of my said wife Jane, Negro woman named Patience and her child Fanny and what increase the saidwench Patience may have for the future to my four said daughters, to be equally divided between them. Item:I do will and bequeath to my sons James, George, Thomas, and a child in the womb after the decease or marriage of my said wife, one Negro boy named Jacob if redeemed. If not a Negro fellow named Will with two feather beds and all of my stock of cattle, horses, hogs and what household furniture that belongs to me, and plantation utensils and one old waggon to be equally divided between them. Item:It is my will and desire that if any of my four said daughters to depart this life without any lawful heirs or issue of their bodies, then for want of such heirs it is my will and desire and bequeath for what I have willed them to be equally divided between my said daughters that may survive, and as for a feather bed that willed to my daughter, Margaret, I made a mistake in willing it for the said bed is her own right and property. It is a bed she has made and earned since she has been her own woman and for herself therefore the said bed is not to be appraised as my estate. Also be it remembered that my father William Rousseau in the year 1784 did lend me one Negro fellow named Peter during my said father’s pleasure which my father was to have him any time he pleased to call for him which said Negro is none of my property and it is my desire that the said Negro, Peter, work on this plantation I live on to help raise my children until my father shall call for him or until my said father’s pleasure to be known if he should please give him to any of my children. Item:I do give and bequeath to my son William $1.00. Item:I do leave, constitute my trusty friends Ignatius Few and Col. William Few my whole sole executors to this my last will and testament as witness my hand and seal this fifth of September 1796. John Roussseau
