Help with the John, Greenberry, & Green B. Roden/Rawdon Famiy
Hello List/Board Members,
My name is Rick Gray. I am not a Rawdon/Roden family descenddant, but trying to help a freind of mine locate some things on her family. She descends from Green B. Roden via his son William Rawdon. Green was the son of Greenberry who was the son of John.
Like I said the names are kind of new to me but I have been doing some research the last few days trying to get a feel for the family. I have found a couple of things I know that I need to order, but thought that I would try some of the Rowdan/Roden researchers to see what you might be able to share first. And ask for some help on some other things. I am sure that I will have good success with this, as I have from many of the surnames I have searched in my own family. I have constantly found good folks out there who have been so generous.
I am going to try to list all the questions I have in this one post, insted of making several - sorry so long.
First, I have found the transcription of the will of John Roden from Chester County, South Carolina, but was wondering if someone had the will scanned into their computer or available that I might pay them for a copy of it. I would love to attach the copy to the report I am compiling for my friend.
Second, I have estimated that John Roden married Sarah Elizabeth Potts around 1770, but have not been able to locate a marriage record. All the places I have found anything on the Internet does not list a date or place either. Any help with that appreciated too.
Third, I have found some listings that state Greenberry Roden married Abigail Medlock Hill in 1834, but they do not list a place. I have not been able to locate a marriage record. Some estimate the marriage as being much earlier. Anyone have any additional info on this?
Fourth, I have seen listings for Greenberry as dying in both Greene County, Alabama and Coweta County, Georgia. I know the index of wills in Coweta County lists a will for a Greenberry Roden. I have not ordered the will yet. Does anyone have a copy of the will and confirm that it is for the right Greenberry (son of John)? Can anyone confirm where he actually died? Would love a copy of the will also and will order it if needed.
Fifth, can anyone confirm if the land grant that some list for Greenberry Roden was Dickson, Tennessee or Dickson County. I have found some say which book it is in, but have not been able to locate it so far.
Sixth, I read in a post on the Internet that Green B. Roden was indicted for murder in 1834 and acquitted in 1836. It was not stated which county this was in. I am assuming Wayne County as that is where the family was living in 1830, and he is on tax lists for Wayne about this time too. Does anyone have any details on the murder?
Seventh, and last, it is told to my friend for years and posted several places on the Internet that Green B. had six sons who served in the Civil War - 3 for the Confederacy and 3 for the Union. After 3 days of exhaustive searches of the Civil War records on the Internet and at the local archives, I can only locate 2 of the boys. They are John and Levi. Green had 8 boys and I have ruled out the youngest 2 (Greenberry and James Thomas) due to their ages. That leaves Franklin, Alexander/Sandy, George W., and William to be the other 4 boys who served. I found some possibles for William but ruled all of them out due to various reasons.
Can anyone give me any other info on the boys military service. Is this one of those family tales or am I just missing something. I have looked at records just searching the boys first names, various spellings of the last names, looking at records for all the Units formed in the ares they lived in at the time. I just cannot figure out the other 4 and where they served.
As I said the names are not as familiar to me as my own family, but I really want to help my friend out on this. I will be glad to share my report of information with anyone who needs it. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Rick Gray
