Revolutionary War Soldier, NH, Private, Under Capt.Nathan Brown, and Colonel Pierce Long, one year service.
"N.H. pair still holds marriage record"
GREENLAND, N. H. (AP)--They were born more than 250 years ago, but a Greenland couple who were married 86 years still are recognized as the world's longest-married couple.
Actually, the Guiness Book of World Records says Lazarus and Molly (Webber) Rowe are tied with a couple from India for the longest marriages in history.
The Rowes were born in 1725, married at age 18, and died in 1829.
The couple is believed to have been married in Greenland by Congregational Pastor William Allen in 1743.
However, marriage records from that time are not available because they accidently burned long ago, according to Paul Hughes, a Greenland resident knowledgeable about town history.
Lazarus Rowe was a soldier who once escaped being burned to death by Indians during the French and Indian War, according to information obtained from a Sep. 29, 1829, entry in the New Hampshire Gazette, published in Portsmouth.
The newspaper account says Rowe once 'was taken captive and was once on the point of being burned to death by the savages when he escaped by an almost superhuman effort.'
Rowe also fought in a bloody confrontation near Lake George, N. Y., on Sept. 6, 1755, in which French commander Baron Dieskau was defeated, and served under Col. Monroe at the surrender of Fort William Henry in 1757, the newspaper said.
Lazarus 'retained to his last days a vivid recollection of the terrific scenes of that seige and capitulation and of the massacre that followed,' the newspaper said.
Little information about Molly Rowe has been written, but the 1829 newspaper account said the couple 'reared a numerous family and saw their descendants of the fifth generation.'Lazarus died in Liminton, Maine, on Sept 14, 1829 and Molly died in the spring of 1829."

OBIT, "The Connecticut Courant," 29 Sep. 1829, Hartford, CT.
"At Limington, on the 14th inst.Mr. Lazarus Rowe, aged 104!Mr. Rowe was a native of Greenland, New Hampshire and was one of the first settlers of Baldwin, in Maine, where he lived within about two years since. His wife, Molly Rowe who died last spring, was born the same year with her husband, viz. in 1725.They were married at the age of 18, and consequently lived together eighty-six years. It is presumed that the Unied States do not contain another man and wife, who have lived so long in the conjugal state. They reared a numerous family, and saw their descendants of the fifth generation!Their youngest son is now a pensioner of the revolutionary army."
