Hello Barbara I believe the Giant was James Rowlatt/let Two or three of our extended family pinpoint him as the Giant I have a copy from a newspaperartcile which puts the giant at Tansor Northants I have been to both Tansor and Fotheringhay and know there is no gravestone .The article I have says the grave is at Tansor on the riverside of the graveyard in an unmarked grave, possible to deter "grave robbers" of the day. James we believe was baptised in 1800. He is the brother of my Grt Grt grandmother Sarah Rowlett who married William Sismey. My family then follows down through the Sismeys until My Grandmother married a "Fenman" in 1897. I have just attended her daughters 100th birthday in Carlisle on the 4th of May this year. The rowletts and sismeys are linked through various marriages mainly because the lived in the same area. The sismeys seem to have started out in Leicestershire and Rutland as far back as 1600 and the Rowletts hovererd around North Northamptonshire. Both families spread out along the A47 towards Peterborough, which is where my family settled. We have come to a standstill with the Giant but know he died in or around 1870 spending time on the road as a sideshow attraction returning to Tansor to work either on the farm or on the road. You can also look for a relationship between Starsmores and rowletts they also married into the Family. I found a website which listed all the Northants rowletts but I dont think it is active now I also look at a Sligowebsite which listed rowletts. You might also look through the name Peach as I believe there is a connection in Fotheringay. James's father was Thomas who I believe was the blacksmith in Fotheringhay. Another rowlett was a blacksmith in Elton. Elton graveyard is not very good most of the gravestones are made from sandstone which has eroded badly now.I am going to Peterborough in a couple of weeks time and hope to see my cousin who has a book on Tansor and she says there is a reference to the Giant in it. I spent a morning in Peterborough Library looking at 1901 newspapers (the date on the article )but found nothing. I think somebody wrote the wrong date on it because there is a photo of the Giants house in the middle of the article but photos did not appear in newspapers until around 1914. I spend more time on the Sismey family mainly because it is an unusual name but do give some time to the rowletts especially anything on the giant and would be interested in anything you find on the rowlette /lat/lett/ let depending on who spelt it.
