My family lives in the Los Angeles area, but hails from Colombia. My father, Guillermo Rubiano Guitierez, was born in Boyaca. His father, Uriel Rubiano Correal, also came from Boyaca. Additionally my uncles and Aunt's names are Alberto, Rafico, and Silvia. To my knowledge the majority of my family lives in Bogota.
My Aunt Silvia use to mention her grandfather's native language was not Spanish, but she never had any idea what language it was. I would like to think it was Asturian, as the name Rubiano comes from Asturias which is a principality in northern Spain.
From the research I have done Rubiano is the Castilianized version of the Asturian-Leonese name Rubianu. There is actually a Parish called Rubiano located in the municipality of Grado in the Princepality of Asturias (Near Oviedo).
I have never met a Rubiano who was not related to me and have only once met a person who has met a Rubiano who was not my family. It was actually a Filipino man who informed me that Rubiano is a common name in the Philippines. To my knowledge there are also Rubianos in both North & South America, all over Europe (even Sweden), and Japan.
It would be great to meet any other Rubianos to try and trace our ancestry....who knows we could be distant cousins.
Feel free to contact me in either English or Spanish.
