Mike Drew's conversation with Cecile Mallahan November 2001
Grandpa Huston died in Whitehall,Montana of TB. Lizzie Houston was with him at that time.... Grandpa Huston raised pigs, cows, and chickens.
Excerpts from " I Remember...I Think" (p.12-XX)
Grandpa Huston was an alcoholic and not much fun to be around and he was very hard on Tubby(his youngest son).
One of my mother's funniest stories was about an incident that happened when she and Uncle Al were maybe thirteen and fourteen. Grandpa came home drunk and was beating up on Grandma, something he often did. The two kids had seen it often enough that they decided to beat up on Grandpa, but all the could lay their hands on were turnips and rutabagas. They pummeled him with the vegetables until he fell down. Apparently his spirits( not the alcohol kind) were crushed to be thus beaten by his kids- with begetables no less- and he never touched Grandma again. Mother would laugh until she cried telling that story.
The Mallahans knew how to eat. But then so did the Hustons on the ranch in Whitehall where they moved from Livingston.
I remember the house there... I don't know how many acres it had. most of it was planted in alfalfa and there was a big pasture for the cows. A big ditch ran by the red barn and small irrigation ditches ran through the alfalfa.
I can still picture Grandpa damming up the ditches or opening up new places for the water to run, all the time holding the shovel between the stump of his right arm and his left hand.
There was also a huge garden- potatoes enough to keep all winter, an asparagus patch, rhubarb, lots of corn, gooseberries, currants, beans, peas, carrots, beets, lettuce, chard, onions, turnips, rutabagas, and many fruit trees.

A will might mention Thomas; however, he was not on the 1850 census and it would be hard to determine if Arthur was his father because the 1840 census records only showed the head of the household.
