Dear Betty, I was delighted to find your message. We are descended from the same branch of the Russoms. Your grandfather, William Oliver Russom, was, I think, a son of John Price Russom and his wife Cornelia Jackson. William Oliver had a brother Price Hampton who left Georgia and lived in Arkansas at time of his death. William Oliver also had 2 sisters, Lizzie and Mattie Emma. John Price Russom (your great grandfather) was a son of Oliver Russom and Mary Matilda Cleghorn.(His brothers and sisters were: William A. (Bud), Oliver Milton (Mint), Roland Weedon, Joe W., Nancie Elizabeth, Margaret and Isabella Victoria.) (Isabella Victoria Russom was my grandmother.) Oliver Russom's(your grgrgrandfather) parents were Price Russom and Elizabeth Weedon.(Price and Elizabeth were your grgrgrgrandparents)I think both of them were born in Maryland but both lived in N.C. when they married (1798)They moved to Georgia (Franklin Co.) by1801. Elizabeth Weedon Russom died and Price remarried to Mary(Pollie) Whitworth and they had one son, Winston Price Russum.(Yes, I believe that his descendants spell the name with a "u", but most of the other descendants of Price spell it with an "o". Price died either just before or just after that child, Winston Price Russum, was born, 1815, I believe.
Interesting about John Price Russom. He and Cornelia didn't get along well at all. They separated and Cornelia lived with her parents in Georgia. My aunt, Nancie Elizabeth said that John Price went "out west". I think that turned out to be Arkansas.I found him in a census of Arkansas with what I supposed to be a second wife and child named Andrew. This fellow, Andie Russom, came to Texas and found his way to the home of my grand parents and told Grandma that he was son of her brother.(I don't think anybody had heard from John Price Russom in many years and they knew nothing of a second marriage and a child.)My grandmother was convinced that he was indeed son of John Price Russom for she recognized his watch as one that had belonged to her brother. That would probably have been before 1920. It was not until many years later, of course, that I began to look at old records and found the census showing Price and son Andie in Arkansas. Most of what I have written is from memory.I do have some records to substantiate some of these things. My aunt, Nancie Elizabeth Russom Whitworth, is the source for the names of the children of John Price Russom and and she obviously was SURE about William Oliver Russom being his son and therefore her nephew. She and her husband, Richard V. Whitworth, had remained in Paulding Co., GA and was better acquainted with them than was my grandmother who came to Texas with her husband, Thomas Richard Mallory, in 1886. Unfortunately my grandmother died before I was born and I never got to meet her. However I did go to Georgia where I met her sister, Aunt "Sis" Whitworth, and the other sister, Aunt "Meg" (Margaret), came to visit us for about a week shortly before her death about 1941 or so. She, also, had moved to Texas. She had married Malachi (Mally) Pickett and after he died she remarried to Tom McKinney, but all her children were from first marriage. I hope that i have made this clear enough to understand, if not, just let me know and I'll try again.
