Intrigued by the Martha Ann Saffold -Whitsett connection on the headstone Nancy Bell found, I found an Ancestry.com “Whitsitt” Family Tree showing a “23 Dec 1851 marriage ofHowell Whitsitt to Martha Ann Saffold”.I should have realized right off that on a timeline basis, this Martha Ann Saffold could not have been Martha Ann Wooten, wife of Wm Cade Saffold, but rather was their daughter, “Martha”, b. abt 1828. (For whom my Saffold database shows no middle name.).
TheseFamily Trees show two daughters for this marriage: Sallie E. Whitsitt, b. 1852, and Martha H.Whitsitt, b. 1855... A LaDell Whitsitt Montgomery Tree shows a 10 Jul 1878 marriage of Sallie E. to Willam T. or F. Scott.
Back to Martha Ann Wooten Saffold: The Martha H. [A.]Saffold in the 1840 Census living in Kemper Co, Mississippi is unquestionably Mary Ann Wooten Saffold. At sometimebetween 1837, the birth year of hers and William Cade Saffold’s youngest child, and 1840, she migrated with seven minors and seven slaves from Georgia to Kemper,County, Mississippi. Spouse William Cade Saffold has disappeared – death or divorce. Probably death. Martha Ann is to be lauded for what was an incredibly brave undertaking for a widow.
Why to Mississippi? She may have been invited out there by William Cade’s brother, Bird Saffold, then living in Newton County, MS, fifty miles or so to the southwest of Kemper County, where Martha Ann settled. (Kemper County borders Georgia.)
By the 1950 Census Martha Ann (listed as“Mrs. Saffold”, age 56”) is living with children Allen Saffold, age 22, and Martha” Saffold, age 21, Wm Cade, Jr. having married in 1848; Evaline at an unknown date. Reuben’s whereabouts is not known.Daughter Martha would marry Howell Whitsitt a year later and [Drury] Allen would marry Sarah (Unknown) before 1856.
Martha Ann does not appear in the 1860 Census, suggesting that she died some time in the 1850’s. My database does not show where she was buried.
