Hi, Deb --
Last night I found a 1754 militia roster (Granville Co, NC) which showed a Thomas SALE (#108) in Capt. Sugar JONES' company. In the same company there's a William "SAUL" and I wonder if that might actually be "SALE."Also found a Capt. John SALLIS’s militia company, so I think that SALLIST / SALLIS, etc. name probably is a different name, not a misspelling of SALE.I've seen it a couple of other places, too.And I suspect that the name of Jacob SHELL's son-in-law, "SALLES" is more likely SALLIS / SALLIST than a misspelling of SALE, but I could be wrong.
I did not find any SALE, any spelling, in a 1778 list of Oaths of Allegiance taken in various districts (NC).There were some other surnames I've seen connected with SALE, such as MITCHELL, GRANT, DUNCAN, KING (connected w/SAYLE), plus AMIS (3) and HAWKINS which ties in with AMIS in Hawkins Co, TN -- and some others.
Quite a few county boundaries were changing and new counties being formed in the time period I'm interested in so there are a lot of other counties I'll need to check.
Keep in touch!
Becky
