. GEORGE W SALMON (D) (DANIEL and Martha CAthcard) was born 17 June 1824 in Philadelphia, PA, USA, and died 28 August 1902 in Sauk Center, MN, USA. He married LAVINA D. HOFFMAN Abt. 1853 in in, Pennsylvania ?, daughter of JOHN HOFFMAN and MARY DEPEW. She was born 17 June 1839 in Pittsburg, PA, USA, and died 1919 in Todd County, MN, USA.
He settled 150 acres of Sec 25 - 127N-36W- 5th PM, West Union. He also had the patent to 40 acres SENW 18-127N-34W-5thPM. Copies of these patents on file Mn1600-.484 and MN1900 - .181(Bureau of Land Management - Eastern States, General Land Office.
According to" Todd County Histories"
He was a private in Capt Ramsdell unit. In 1861 George and his father-in-law, John C Hoffman bought two adjoining farms(claims that they had previously chosen but failed to register at the land office- The families that had settled them and built cabins were quick to take the $200.00 each that was offered and settle other claims near by). on Sect 25, West Union. The Salmond farm was referred to as a "model farm", due to George's efficiency and success in his farming operations.
Later in the 60's George Salmond also settled in the southwestern Kandota area. He quickly became one of the most successful farmers in this county as well. Because Sauk Center was so close eventually the Salmonds retired "to town".
In 1870 Census, Farmworth $2500., personal estate, $1000. He owned 3 horses, 4 cows and 9 other cattle, 6 hogs. He planted wheat, corn and oats.
