I am happy to finally see a "LYFORD GenForum, and thought I would pass the information on to the SALTER GenForum as well.Along those lines, I would like to simply post my descent from the Rev.John Lyford to present, and would encourage other Lyfords to do so as well. If dates of birth or death differ from yours, please excuse my "old data."I do have certificates or documentation of birth/christenings on most ancestors, but did not have time to look all of them up so borrowed
from my rough notes.
The Rev.John Lyford is a fascinating individual who was accused of "treason" and scandal for speaking out against the cruelty and arrogance of some of our Puritan fathers when their actions were unncessecarily harsh, and at times, sadistic. While never downplaying the contributions of the early Pilgrim leaders, many of whom are my ancestors,it is important, in my opinion, to always be aware of the "human factor" in any historical situation. To reserve judgement while at the same time gaining an appreciation for the many sacrifices and accomplishments of all the men, women, and children who helped to shape and continue our early nation's objectives of freedom and liberty is an essential quality when studying one's ancestry as well as American history in general.I would love to hear from others regarding their lines to the Lyford family, as well as other surnames.
