MaeBelle Carlson was born on May 1, 1921, in Slayton, Minnesota to Walter and Ethel Gray Samuelson. She grew up on the family farm in Mason Township and attended Prairie Hope Country School District 112.She graduated from the Slayton High School in 1938 and then attended Mankato Commercial College for one year. MaeBelle then returned to Slayton and worked at the AAA office for four years. On February 10, 1943, she and George W. Carlson were married at MaeBelle’s parents home. Following their marriage they farmed near Chandler, Minnesota for seven years before they purchased a farm in Lowville Township.In 1952, they moved to the Carlson family farm in Leeds Township and farmed there for many years. In 1981, they retired and moved into Lake Wilson, Minnesota. George passed away on March 31, 2000. MaeBelle moved to the Westside Apartments in Slayton in 2001. In 2004, MaeBelle became a resident of the Golden Living Center-Slayton and passed away there on June 26, 2008, at the age of 87. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Lake Wilson, Minnesota where she was active in the UMW and also a circle member. MaeBelle also was a member of Eastern Star and the Lake Willy Go Getters Extension Club and the Lake Wilson Senior Citizens. MaeBelle enjoyed spending time with her family and many friends.
Survivors include her seven children and their spouses: Ruth Jorgensen, Sioux Falls, SD; Roger Carlson, Luverne, MN; Lois and Richard Lenander, Sioux Falls, SD; Gary and Marilyn Carlson, Lake Wilson, MN; Loren and Ruth Carlson, Fulda, MN; Karen and Gene Kruse, Sioux Falls, SD; and Mark and Jannette Carlson, Lake Wilson, MN; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; three sisters and one brother: Marjorie Gehlsen, Slayton, MN; Cleota Platt, Slayton, MN; Mildred and Henry Hay, Walnut Grove, MN; and Dave and Marilyn Samuelson, Slayton. MN; and two sisters-in-law: Virginia Samuelson, Lake Wilson, MN and Roberta Carlson,Okoboji, IA. She was preceded in death by her husband George; son-in-law Vic Jorgensen; daughter-in-law Gloria Carlson and two brothers: Lewis and Harvey Samuelson.
Funeral services were held at United Methodist Church in Lake Wilson, MN on Monday, June 30, 2008, at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. John Marburger officiating. The organist was Julie Brossard. Special music by Gene Kruse. The pallbearers were her grandchildren: Reid Jorgensen, Carey Feller, Dana Carlson, Stephen Carlson, Chad Carlson, Monica Rishling, Krista Gillette, Keith Carlson, Jeremy Carlson, Bryan Carlson, Nate Kruse, Lance Kruse, Trent Carlson and Lissa Carlson. Honorary pallbearers were Rick Hurd, Bruce Hurd, Bill DeKruif, Ray Pierson, and Fritz Bloemendaal. Interment is at Slayton Memorial Gardens, Slayton, MN.
