This sounds eerily similar to a family tale in our family, My great grandfather, Edward Elias Sanger, born in East Prussia, was said to have been a sea captain, gone to California for the gold rush and then to Australia as a sheep rancher, having a ranch named Sanger Springs, later ending up in New York. Some in the fmaily claimed he was English. We don't think any of it (except being born in Germany and ending up in NYC) is true, but who knows????
