Basile Sanschagrin, Levis, Quebec
In an effort to identify the ancestry of Basile Sanschagrin who married Josephine Fagot and lived in the Levis area, the following material was collected. Possibly it will be of interest to someone else working on this family who relocated to Laconia, New Hampshire.
Sanschagrin/Lasalle Ancestry
Sanschagrin was a dit name commonly used by several family lines, one being Lasalle. Church marriage records and several Quebec genealogical source documents identify many individuals as both Sanschagrin and Lasalle.
The earliest known member of this family line near Quebec was Basile Lasalle who married Marguerite Gagnon about 1757 and lived at St-Famille on L’Ile D’Orleans Island. Marriage records for their children universally identify the father as Basile, but the Dictionnaire Genealogique gives the husband of Marguerite Gagnon to be Francois De La Salle dit Sanschagrin.
Three children known to have been born to this couple were Marie Marguerite (baptized on October 25, 1761 at Chateau Richer), Francois (baptized on July 1, 1768) and Basile (baptized on August 22, 1772).
The son Basile Lasalle dit Sanschagrin married Marie Genevieve Gagne at St-Famille on February 13, 1797. Marie’s parents were Pierre Gagne and Marie Plante.
Children born to Basile and Marie included Marie (married Pierre Drouin on November 8, 1819), Francois, Basile (born August 20, 1805 and married Catherine Nadeau on February 13, 1827), Catherine (married Francois Dion on June 19, 1826), Jean (married Scholastique Dion on February 1, 1831), Josephyte (married Francois Canac-Marquis on May 11, 1841) and Pierre (baptized on May 3, 1812 and died on May 16, 1889). All of the marriages of these children took place of the L’Ile D’Orleans.
Basile, husband of Marie Gagne, died on February 5, 1836. Their son Francois Lasalle dit Sanschagrin married Archange Foucher at St-Francois on the island on October 26, 1824.
Children born to Francois and Archange Lasalle dit Sanschagrin included:
Cyprien – Married Marie Josephyte Fagot at Notre Dame, Levis on October 24, 1854. Cyprien in 1861 lived in Gentilly, Quebec. Nothing further regarding this couple has been found.
Pierre – Born in 1831 and married Marie Adeline Guay at Levis on July 10, 1855. Adelard, a son, died on August 26, 1858, age 15 months. He was buried at Notre Dame. Another son with the same name died on February 16, 1860, age one year. He also was buried at Notre Dame. Phillipe, a son of Pierre and Celina Guay, died at two years of age on September 11, 1871. Burial was at Notre Dame. Pierre apparently later married Rose-de-Lima Guay since their son Joseph died on June 7, 1893, age 22. Pierre died at Levis on September 26, 1921. Two sons of Pierre and his first wife, Peter and Thomas, were married in 1889 and 1892 at Sacred Heart Church in Laconia, New Hampshire. Peter married Georgianna Delise on September 24, 1889, and Thomas married Virginia Lemieux on May 16, 1892.
Octave – Born October 1835 and married Marie Pouliot at Levis on January 13, 1852. Octave worked as a tanner. An unnamed child of this couple was born and died on June 1, 1852. Burial was at Notre Dame in Levis the following day. A daughter Emile, age eight months, died on September 10, 1854, with burial at Notre Dame. Octave in 1863 was a resident of Lauzon, a suburb of Levis. A daughter Marie died on July 28, 1865 at age eleven months. Burial was at Notre Dame. A daughter Marie-Rebecca died at age eleven months on August 13, 1865. Burial was at Notre Dame. Another daughter Philomene died on August 24, 1873, age eleven years. Burial was at Notre Dame. Octave died on February 5, 1879.
Sauveur – Married Catherine Pouliot at Levis in 1863. A daughter Marie-Catherine died at age eleven months on February 22, 1867. She was buried two days later at Notre Dame. Another daughter with the same name died on May 17, 1873, age four years and three months. She was also buried at Notre Dame. A son Adelard died at age 14 months just a few weeks later on July 27, 1873. He was buried the following day at Notre Dame in Levis. A son Joseph-Napoleon died at age seven on January 31, 1878, and was buried two days later at Notre Dame in Levis. A son Joseph married Bernadette Decelles at Sacred Heart Church in Laconia, New Hampshire onMay 23, 1905. Although the date Sauveur died is unknown, he was working at Levis as a tanner in 1871.
Apparently following the death of Archange, Francois’ first wife, he married Marie-Madeleine Labbe on October 19, 1841 at St. Jean on the island.
Although this review of the Sanschagrin/Lasalle family has not identified the parents of Basile, father of Josephine Sanschagrin, the evidence uncovered suggests that Basile was probably a close relative, if not a brother, to Cyprien, Pierre, Octave and Sauveur Sanschagrin, all sons of Francois Lasalle dit Sanschagrin and Archange Foucher. That evidence includes:
• Cyprien Sanschagrin married Marie Josephyte Fagot at Levis in 1854. Basile Sanschagrin married Josephine Fagot about 1853.
• Sons of Pierre and Sauveur Sanschagrin married at Sacred Heart Church in Laconia, New Hampshire where Basile’s daughter Josephine Larrivee attended.
• Basil’s daughter Josephine Sanschagrin married Jules Larrivee in 1874 at the same church in Levis where so many of the other Sanschagrin descendants are buried.
Hence, only circumstantial evidence provides hints as to the possible ancestry of Basile Sanschagrin and Josephine Fagot.
Basile Sanschagrin and Josephine Fagot Family
According to the 1900 Census, Josephine Fagot Sanschagrin was born in November 1832 and came to the United States in 1877. The seven children born to Basil and Josephine Sanschagrin included:
Marie Josephine – Born February 1855 (see below).
Delphine – Born about 1858, she first married Heliode Begin. The family in 1900 was living in Laconia, New Hampshire. Present were Heliode (48), Delphine (42), Josephine Sanschagrin (67 and mother-in-law), Delphine Gingras (13), Joseph Sanschagrin (19 and single), Edna Sanschagrin (18 and single) and Delphine’s niece Eva Daoust and child (see below). Delphine, later a widow, married Cyprien Bedard on August 14, 1920 at Sacred Heart Church in Laconia. When Cyprien died at Laconia on March 26, 1937, the couple lived at 168 Union Avenue. Delphine Bedard’s will dated August 24, 1937 left bequests as follows: Catherine Laplante, sister ($1,500), City of Laconia for perpetual care of plot at the Catholic Cemetery ($200), Reverend Rudolph Heon for masses ($400), Eva Vigneault ($2,000), Joseph Sanschagrin, brother ($800), Armand Duffy ($800) and Mrs. Lillian Duffy ($800). The balance of the estate was to be divided evenly between Catherine Laplante, Eva Vigneault, Joseph Sanschagrin, Armand Duffy and Lillian Duffy. Delphine died on September 4, 1937 and is buried at Sacred Heart Church in Laconia.
Catherine – Born in November 1864 and married Philippe Laplante at Levis on July 18, 1882. The couple in 1900 was living in Laconia’s 4th Ward. Phil was employed at a hosiery mill. Catherine (36) reported that she had entered the United States in 1870 and that seven of her nine children were living. The date both Phil and Catherine claim to have immigrated does not make sense because in Catherine’s case, she would have been six years old in 1870. Her mother claims to have immigrated in 1877. Those children in 1900 were Fred (10 and also employed at a hosiery mill), Mamie (9), Eddie (8), Alice (7), Ledor (5), Hector (4) and Willie (2). All of these children were born in New Hampshire. The 1910 Census documents the family still in Laconia’s 4th Ward. Philip worked that year as a show store salesman. Children living with the family included Corrine (21), Alice (18), Rudolph (16), Hector (16) and Madeleine (6). Catherine reported in 1910 that six of her ten children were living. The 1920 Census shows the family still living in Laconia. Present were Phil (57), Catherine (56), Hector (23) and Madeleine (16). Catherine now reported her arrival in the US as 1888. Catherine, now a widow, was living in Laconia in 1937 at 23 Bowman.
Joseph Michel – Married Marie-Rosaline Gausselin at Levis on May 28, 1883. A son Joseph was born in Laconia on January 23, 1887 and was baptized the same day at St. Joseph’s Church. The sponsors were Delphine, the senior Joseph’s sister, and her husband Heliode Begin. Joseph (52) was possibly living in 1910 in Belmont, New Hampshire next door to Gustave and Belsemiere Dagenais (see below).
Very little is known about Basile and Josephine, although he probably died in Canada.
A Mrs. Basile Sanschagrin was living in 1871 in Quebec City. It also is of interest that in 1900, a Basil Sanschagrin (a widower born September 1858 in Canada) was living in Concord, New Hampshire. Basile might have been another child of this couple or a close relative.
Although Josephine claims to have entered the United States in 1877, the family has not been found for the 1880 US Census.
Josephine (68) was living in Laconia, New Hampshire in 1900 with the family of her daughter Delphine. Josephine indicated that year that five of her seven children were living. Josephine presumably died before 1910.
The daughter Marie Josephine Sanschagrin married Jules Larrivee at St. Notre Dame in Levis, Quebec on July 27, 1874.
