Civilla (Baldwin) Sayles
For those interested in Civilla (Baldwin) Sayles (1817-1900) a lifelong resident of Madison Co., NY, I wonder how many realize that "Civilla" is a variant of her great-grandmother's name, Sybillah (White) Baldwin (b. 1741, Spencer, MA), wife of David Baldwin (b. 1733) and daughter of Sybillah (Buckminster) White, wife of John White and daughter of Joseph Buckminster, of Framingham.
Public records in Framingham and Spencer, MA, as well as other places, indicate that no one seemed very sure how to spell Sybillah, which at times was shortened, so that there was at least one Sybil-- Baldwin, who married her cousin David Cranson, settling with him in Madison Co., NY, around 1810. The name in its various forms migrated, then, from at least Framingham to Spencer to Ashifled, MA, to Madison Co., NY, and then to points west.
