Nicholas Scallan was the first SCALLAN I find in America. He settled in Baton Rouge when it was named Fort San Carlos under the Spanish sometimes before 1776 as this is the first recorded date of the baptism of his daughter Dorothea. There are other Scallan's in the country at the time and are in fact related but to what extent I cannot determine. Most of the Scallan's in the north arrived during the potato famines of the 1840's while most of the Scallan's in the south (especially Louisiana) can trace their lineage directly to Nicholas Scallan and Marie J. Oubre.
I have all this with dates, references and so on in my condensed history which I hope to have updated shortly. The Scallan's are a very old family from Wexford, Ireland (on the southern coast). They have been there a very long time and in my condensed history, I show the name origins and other alternative info. Some have said that the name originally came from the early Viking invaders of Ireland. Others say No it is a very ancient Irish name. But there is nothing really concrete as most of the records of Ireland were destroyed by the British. What IS certain is that the Scallans have been in Ireland for a very long time indeed. I had originally intended on publishing all my data in a book so that it would be available for all Scallans to purchase and have some history on the family. However, due to the constant changing and updating, whatever was published would surely be outdated as soon as it was available. So I changed my idea and decided instead to make it available to whoever was interested in it. Hopefully, those that read it can add to it and help me keep it updated so we can all benefit from it from now on. I also have all the data on Family Tree Maker and will be loading it onto their site as well. That way I can reach many more people and maybe get more data entered into the family'' database. When I first started, there was very little available on the family and what was there was mostly false. SO anything you can add or find, let me know and we'll put it in there.
