Okay, here is what I have for sure about George W Scates/Skates1880 United States Census for George Scatesand his wife Rejoice,George b. in SC Rejoice b. in SC. George's father b in VR mother SC. Rejoice's father b. in SC and mother b in SC.their daughter Nancy b. in AR states George was b. in SC and mother SC.
The scates family bible washed away in the 1929 flood but relativesremember a John in the family, and that would be correct because John Hayne was the father of Matthew.
Biography- Scates plantation was on the Staunt River Halifax, VR.
Obit for Matthew, From the Carolina Sparten 1866/1872 4 Oct. 1866 Died on the 20 of Aug. last, near the Cowpens Battleground , at the residence of William Cudd, Mr Matthew Scates, aged 108 years, he was a soldier of the Revolution, died athome of his grandson. Matthew was b. 1758 father John Hayne Scates. mother Elizabeth Spraggins. John's father was Jeames Scates b abt 1655 d. 1685-6 estate taken 31 march 1685in Massachusetts.There are manyexplanations about black dutch.I have done extensive research on this subject, and I still do not understand what is what.I am interested in inf you have about the Scates in SC.Sounds interesting.Hopes this inf. helps.Irene
