Annie,
It is hard work but well worth the effort. I go thru the same thing in Maine doing research.
The two people you are looking for may have moved into Bucks County, PA and could be buried there. They married c. Fall 1772 in Readington. Had about 9 children: Henry D. or Hendrick, Rebecca, John, George, Lena, Peater, David, Jacob and an infant.Lenah or Helena Hoffman or Huffman was born c. 1754/5.
David was a captain in the New Jersey militia (Line Number W1089). There is some info on him thru the DAR in Washington, D.C. (DAR Patriot Index R929.3D, 1966.Lenah applied for a Revolutionary War pension on June 12, 1847. David was allegedly a spy for General Washington, but that has not been confirmed in military records.
There is a tavern or history of it in the area where Gen. Washington stayed and the Schamp's/Shamp's are involved somehow.
Hoped I helped you a little. Can you give me exact directions (geographic coordinates would be neat), etc. where that Shamp Family Cemetery is located and a possible picture of it? Would love to take a trip down there someday. Were the stones a mix of dark slate (1700-1800's) and whitish granite (1800-1900's)?
There is a migration pattern of Shamp's going from NJ, PA, NY, OH, IN, IL, IO, CA (1860's), and spread out into other places. There are definite splits in the family lines.
