Minnesota Schendels, from Danzig/Gdansk

By genealogy.com user November 12, 2000 at 05:51:51

Hi, Everyone! My branch of the family settled in Minnesota in the 1850's.The patriarch of the family was Michael Schendel (born September 23, 1808), who came over from what is now Poland (near Gdansk) with some of his (at least) 24 children. His brother Christopher also came to America. The names of some of their immediate descendants were Gottlieb, August, Christoph, Michael II, Wilhelmina, Amalia, and Henrietta.I'm not sure of exactly where they all fit in (Michael outlived several wives, and I think some of the female names were of wives rather than daughters).Carol Johnson of Duluth, Minnesota, is the keeper of the genealogy flame for this branch of the family. However, even she has been unable to trace our ancestry further back than Michael.

My father, Gordon Schendel (1905-1982), was a somewhat well-known newspaperman/journalist in the 1940's, who eventually settled in south Texas, where my sisters still live.I live in Seattle.

I am pleased to find this website and hope to learn more of our genealogy.I had planned on placing on my own website (www.schendel.net) a section for a Schendel genealogy and chat room, but this project has been on my back burner for a long time. Now it looks like I may not have to!;-)

I would welcome hearing directly from other Schendels and in particular am interested in tracing our ancestry back beyond the 1850's, as well as hearing from anyone who knew my dad.
