Scherrers in Onondaga County, New York
Rudolph Scherrer (b. Alsace - dates unknown)- A soldier in Napoleon's Army. He was one of the few survivors of Marshall Ney's Russian campaign. He was pensioned for life as a result of injuries suffered in that campaign.
His son John S. Scherrer (1824-1887) - Came to Liverpool, NY from Hesse-Darmstadt Germany in 1849. Trained as a weaver. He was one of the first basketmakers in the area later becoming associated with the salt industry. He later worked in the motive power department of New York Central Railroad where he was killed in an accident (29 August, 1887).(Source: Syracuse and its Environs by Franklin Chase 1924 V3)
I have quite a bit of information about the family (spelling later changed to Sharrer) if anyone is interested.
John S. Scherrer was my great great grandfather
