Dick Smaling 5/25/02
Good afternoon Dick, from Lancaster, PA, USA.
Thanks for posting a followup to my posting.
Church records of my maternal ancestors usually spell the surname as SCHMALING until the mid-1800's when most of Johan Georg SCHMALING's descendants dropped the "SH".
John SCHMAELING's (born 1805) famlly bible entries spell it as I have typed it except that the "E" is above the line i.e. between the "A" and the "L". I have been told that this is an alternative to an umlaut.
I have always assumed that my ancstors were German but I am aware of the SMALING name in the Netherlands. I have been unable to locate SMALING's in Germany.
My ancestor Johan Georg SCHMALING was born in 1730 (where?) and died in Lancaster, PA, USA in 1780. He was a member of the Reformed Church which at one time was referred to as Dutch Reformed.
I am interested in any comments you may have on the above or on the surname in general.
Thanks again for posting.
