Sian,
My name is Alison Bartley, my great grandmother Rhoda (or Rose as she was known) was your great grandfather's sister.
Rhoda's father Joseph Schmeisser born c1853 in Wurttemberg, Germany married Sarah Ann Garrett born c1861 in Middx. He came to London, (not sure when), he was a pork butcher and they lived at 100 Long Lane, Leather Market, Bermondsey according to the 1881 census return. Also living there was James Thurrel and Gottlob Eskstein who were listed as Servants (they were pork butcher assistants) Rhoda also had a sister Emily and a brother Alf (as far as I know). Rhoda was born 11.9.1879 in Bermondsey. She later married Arthur George Alloway and they had my grandmother Eva, but Arthur left them and emigrated to America, so I've been told by family members.
There are Schmeissers in America too, my dad was to be evacuated there in World War II, but in the end he didn't go.
Rhoda then married a Patrick Regan and they went on to have several children, most of who have since died, although I am in contact with Frank who lives in London who is in his 80's.
Eva married my grandfather Frederick Bartley and they had Alan Bartley who was my dad.
I'd love to hear from you.
Alison
