Re: MORE SCHMUDE'S
Although I'm not familiar with your Schmude family, my husband's grandfather, Carl Ferdinand Ulbrich, was born April 16, 1848, in Hammer, Militsch Kreis, Prussia, to Gottfried and Beate (Schmude) Ulbrich. After World War II, this part of Germany was given to Poland. The current name of the town where he was born is Ruda Milicka, Milicz, Poland.Ruda Milicka means "Iron Ore Milicka. There is also a Ruda Sulowska (Hammer - Sulau).
Gottfried & his family came to America (New York) May 15,1873. His son, Carl Ferdinand Ulbrich, later married a cousin, Auguste Pauline Schmude, daughter of Wilhelm Schmude & Dorothea Englehardt. Wilhelm & Dorothea married in Prussia. She came to America on June 4, 1873, with the children. We think we've found Wilhelm's immigration record as follows but the last name is spelled incorrectly.Everything else matches:Name: Wilhelm Schmede
Arrival Date: 5 Jun 1872
Estimated birth year: abt 1834
Port of Departure: Swincomingde and Copenhagen and Christiansand
Place of Origin: Germany
Ship Name: Bladworth
I'm sharing this information because these families also lived in PA for awhile -- a town called East Brady in Clarion County -- before moving to WV.I have traced them back several generations in Germany. Also, Wilhelm's Schmude's wife wrote the address 15 Broadway in the prayer book she brought with her.It was the location of The German Society and was not too far from where the immigrants landed. We think she went there for assistance. They landed at Castle Garden which was the immigration hub at that time. This was before Ellis Island was built.
There aren't many Schmudes around.I can send you the rest of the information that I have if you're interested. There just might be something we can connect.I do have the names of the little surrounding towns where this particular Schmude family lived in Prussia.
