Re: Col. James Schoonmaker (Civil War)
Thanks for your reply. My husband's great-grandfather's name was James W. Lewellen. His discharge papers indicate he was a private in Captain J.S.Schoonmaker's company(F), 14th Regiment of Pennsylvania Cavalry Volunteers. He was enrolled Sept. 8, 1864 and discharged at Alexandria, Virginia on May 13, 1865. Since the rank is clearly captain, would this be a promoted Joseph Stockton or a yet-to-be-promoted James Schoonmaker? James Lewellen joined near Uniontown, but family came originally from Monongalia County, (West) Virginia.
