SCHREIER - Nadvorna (Nadvornaya) Ukraine
I'm looking for descendants of SCHREIER's from the area formally known as Galicia (today, it's the south-western Ukraine, just north of Romania and the Carpathian Mountains).
My particular branch came from the town of Nadvorna / Nadworna / Nadwirna / Nadvornaya (it kept changing its official spelling because it kept getting conquered!), but nearby towns include Kalisz (Kalusz), Ivano-Frankivsk (Stanislaw, Stanislau, Stanislawow, Stanislavov), and Kolomyya (Kolomea, Kolomyja).
I am looking specifically for descendants of Ephraim (Froim) SCHREIER and his wife Sarah (Sara) DAVID.Their son, Hyman (Chaim) SCHREIER was my great-grandfather.He ran away from Nadvorna as a very young man (age 14 or so) and made it to NYC circa 1909.He married Ethel (SEGENREICH / SEIGEL) SIEGEL, had three kids, and died in the 1970's.
Hyman had at least one sister and brother, who managed to escape from Nadvorna to France just before the outbreak of WWII.The brother (his Anglicized name was probably Henry) died fighting in the French Resistance movement, circa 1943.The sister (Anglicized name probably Regina) managed, along with her husband and three kids (their names, including Regina's married name, are unknown) survived the war in Paris. In 1948, my family helped get them money to help sneak (a.k.a. bribe) the family into Israel (which was busy fighting their War of Independence and really didn't want any more refugees), but we lost touch with them shortly thereafter.
These may be some of the only SCHREIER relatives left from Nadvorna; in October, 1941, the Nazi's rounded up the remaining 2000 or so Jews from the town, brought them near Ivano-Frankivsk (Stanislaw), and murdered them. Those that were not killed were sent to the Auschwitz death camp. There is at least one survivor known- but he's not, as far as I know, a relative.
So, does anyone have any information on this family? If so, please e-mail me at [email protected].
