Information from her Granddaughter
The Shroeders were from Baden Baden in Germany. Louisa Shroeder's mother died when she was born, and her father who was a minister died two years later in Franco-Prussian War, Louisa's uncle, her father's brother, was to raise her.He had no children of his own. She was raised by a "wet nurse", and sent to a private school until she was 14.She then went to London, England, to work as a nurse maid. The family with whom she worked went to America and left her behind. She then was helped by a policeman to get a job as a maid in a minister's house where she learned to speak English. It was while working there that she met and married Thomas Inman.
Her foster brother, Louis, had an aviary in Baden Baden.
(There is some confusion here as she was supposed to have been raised by her uncle who had no children - yet she had a foster brother and a foster sister.)
