Hi Linda,
I am a gggg grandson of Barnabas Shope of Centre County.I noticed Lee Shope mentioned Roxanna Shope's Book. This book is very good, but she includes the story about Andrew Schoppe, Shope in the story. Her source is William Egle's History of Dauphin and Lebanon County. This story has been repeated by other authors. In a biography of Dr. David Shope, a grandson, Egle statesthat David's grandfather was Andreas Schopp who came in on the Halifax in 1754 and fought in the French and Indian War before moving to Lancaster County.
I went through all of the published works of Egle trying to verify his source.I found the story of Dr. David Shope submitted to him by someone he only identified only by the initials A.B H.A. B. H. could be Adam Hocker who was married to Martha Shope. However the story submitted by A. B. H. did not make any reference to David Shope being the grandson of Andreas Schopp(e). The actual microfilm records of the original ship lists for the Halifax show the names on one lists as andreas Shorpe and on the other as Andreas Shop.In early colonial records the name Shop was associated with Schop/Schopp/Schoppe/Schupp/Schopf/Schopff. The name Shope has also been listed with the Schaub/Shoup.
Barnabas Shope of Centre County was born in Lower Paxton Township, Dauphin County to Bernard Shope.I discovered that Bernard of Dauphin was listed under the name Soop in the 1790 census and Shoop in the 1800 census. Once I dsicovered that I needed to look under a variety of spellings, I started finding him in many colonial records.
I found records in the Pa. Archive showing that Bernard served in the Colonial militia. As a consequence, I checked for SAR and Dar applications and found that Dr. Samuel Zimmerman Shope a gg grandson had submitted an SAR application in 1920.His application states that Bernard Shope arrived in Philadelphia aboard the Neptune on 223 September 1753. John Mason was the Ship's MasterThe lists at the Pa. archives show the following spellings: Barnerd Shop (Captain's lsist, BernaX Schop, Bernhart X Shop on the Oath lists.A tombstone at the family cemetery has the following inscription:
Hier Ruht
Elisabeth
Tochter von Johans
& Elisabeth Schop
Starb 1838 den 2 Sep war alt 2
Jahr 10 M & 12 tag
Translation:
Here Rests
Elisabeth
Daughter Of Johannes
& Elisabeth Schop
Died 1838 on 2
September wwas age 2
Year 10 M and 12 Day
Only 4 tombstones remain in this grave. This is the only one spelled Schop. There is one Catharina Leim buried in the Cenetery and Bernard's son Adam Shope and his wife Esther (Parker) Shope are buried there.I am sure Bernard and his wife are both buried their.I believe the Catharina Leim was a wife of Michael Leim the son of Bernard's neighbor Jacob Leim.I do not know if Cathrina was a Schop, but if she was she was born 1749 before coming to the U.S.The name Leim often appears in colonial records as Lime. The parents of the child named above are buried at the Church of the Brethern (Old German Baptist) on Lyter Lane in Harrisburg, Pa.
A Shoop Church baptismal record for his grandson Ambraham list the name name as Schop.A later baptismal record for
I found colonial tax records showing Bernard in Cocalico Township Lancaster County from 1769 to 1773. On one record he was listed as an inmate meaning he was landless and living with someone else at the time.In 1773 he received a warrant from the Penns for 150 acres in Paxtange Township (now Lower Paxton Dauphin County, Pa.)Thereafter, he appears in records for Paxtang Township. From 1776 to 1782 he served in the Colonial Milita. One record shows his name on a list of individuals losing equipment at the destruction of Fort Washinton in New York. Several Colonial muster records use Barnabus as Bernard's first name.
Bernard died in 1813 his will names all 10 of his children and leaves the land in equal parts to his 7 daughters and 3 sons.Barnabas of Centre County is listed as Bernhart in the will.In 1814 Jacob Shope got a land patent for 180 acres from Pa. Most of Adam Shopes brothers and sister eventually sold their land to Adam and moved on.In his 1907 history of Dauphin County, Kelker states that Bernhart moved to Centre County. His sister Anna Maria Shope who married Michael Poorman also moved to Centre County. Barnabas and his brother-in-law first appear in the tax records in Spring Township Centre County in 1815.From 1816 to 1827 Barnabas and later in that period his first son John appear in Paxton Township, Centre County. After 1827 Barnabas appears in Boggs Township. He lived in the Borough of Milesburg later in life.He died in 1864 and is buried in the Milesburg Cemetery. His tombstone indicates he was 86 years and 10 months old.I think this age may be wrong because his brother Adam who is buried in Dauphin County was born 24 Dec 1776.Back dating puts Barnabas's birth 4 months after his brother Adam.Samuel Shope's SAR application says that Adam Shope was the last of 3 sons suggesing that Barnabas was the middle son,not the last son.
Dr. Shope's SAR application state that Bernard Shope was born in Switzerland and was married to a miss Maeder. There may be a connection to the Schupp (Shoop) family because George Schupp of Upper Dauphin married a Cathrine Matter.I have seen a listing showing her last name as Maeder (Matter, Mattern).A 1934 Baptismal Confirmation list our Shope line as being related to much of the Schupp line. Some earlier Schupps including Chrisopher Schupp who married Anna Margaret Pokin in 1742 and his brother Johann George Schupp are listed listed as Christophel Shope and Johan Jerick Shope aboard the Loyal Judith. Most of the people whose last names were Schupp either used Schupp or Shoop or Shupe or Shup as last names. Those with the schop/Schopp/Schopf spellings generally used the original spellings or Shope in later generations. There are at least 6 and possible more Shope ancestral lines that I have not been able to connect to my line except for the fact that spellings of the original names were Schop or Schopp.
Most of the early Shopes in my line appear to be Old German Baptist except for one Nathaniel Shope a granson of Bernard's who ended up in a dispute with his father about Baptising a family member who died without baptism. He became a Mennonite and went on to be a Bishop in the Mennonite Church.
Although Roxanna's book has some errors, If your in this family line, I think the book is great for tracing back your roots.
If you have more questions, let me know.I may or may not have the answers.
