I have in my possession an oil portrait of Edmond Elkins of Racine. My late mother had attached the following typed information to the back of the frame:
"Portrait of Edmond Elkins
Son of John Elkins and Maria Eliza Putnam
(descendant of Gen. Israel Putnam)
Edmond Elkins born in Racine, Wisconsin Jan. 1841
died Aug. 23, 1866
Carrie Belle Elkins born May 8, 1865
died in Carlisle, Mass.,Dec.15,1941
Edmond Elkins Bates, born Oct. 13, 1895
....." (Personal information about me which I do not post for security reasons.)
That is all the information I have.I have to assume that my Grandmother, Carrie Belle Elkins, was born to Edmond Elkins, but that is not stated. No specifics regarding Edmond Elkins' marriage is stated either.Carrie Belle Elkins married Henry Dodge Bates and that information can be found in the Bates and Fletcher genealogy published circa 1900, which is the copy mother maintained for me.The last published entry is for my Uncle Richard Baxter Bates, the first of three children born to Carrie and Henry. The other two were by father, noted above, and Harriet Bates who married James Patch. Both my Uncle Dick and Aunt Harriet were longtime residents on Bedford Road in Carlisle.
I am the only one of those mentioned above who is still alive, so I inherited the portrait and the scant information attached to it.
Be aware that mother indented the 3rd, 5th and 7th lines, but despite typing them in that format the message preview applied left alignment to all lines.
Finally, as a first time poster I received more stuff regarding content.I hope this will do since I am fed up with the continued redo's from the site.
