Re: Eliza Scribner/Oklahoma
I know this post is several years old, but I'm new to this. My grgrandfather William was brother of Eliza (Lizz) and Loucinda (twins).Their father, Solomon, is buried in Bridgeport, TX.Their mother, Loucinda, is buried in Old Moss Township cemetery near Ada, OK.William is buried in Center cemetery near Ada, OK also.William's wife, Julia Starr Scribner, is buried in Highland cemetery, Stonewall, OK.William and Julia had nine kids, one of whom, John, was my grandfather.John, and his three brothers, Dan, Andy, and Frank, were involved in some interesting activities in 1909.Dan ambushed and killed Zeke Putnam, the marshal in Allen, OK.I believe partially in revenge for Putnam's killing of a Chickasaw indian friend, but probably sweetened by a payoff by the dead indian's brother.Dan and an accomplice were jailed in Ada and were left in the jail by the Ada lynch mob who lynched four other murder suspects, including Jim "Killer" Miller, a notorious Southwestern assasin.Don't know why they passed on Dan.Then the plot thickened. My grandfather, John, and another brother, Frank, were married to two full-blood Chickasaw sisters, Katie (my grandmother) and Lillie.Apparently, Lillie was aware of Dan's involvement in Putnam's death and was considered a liability. In any event, she was shot through a window. Another brother, Andy, her husband, Frank, and my grandfather, John, were all arrested for her murder.Andy was later convicted and sent to the Oklahoma state prison.Frank fled to Louisiana and was killed there in a bar a few years later.John was released and continued as a local farmer and merchant.Dan was convicted of murdering the marshal and spent a long time in prison. My father was born the year after the murders. That's a quick version of that family skeleton. There is a lot more detail. My grandparents, parents, and my great-uncle Frank are all buried in Highland cemetery also.I don't know if anyone out there is still interested, but that's my story.thanks.
