Lucy Scuddy b10Aug1914Leakey/Belfalls,Tx
I requested this site be included in order to search for a missing family member that I have looked for over 20 years. Lucy May Scuddy was born in Leakey Texas on 10 Aug. 1914. (her name has been changed??) My Grandmother, Julia May Rowan was only 12 years old when her Father insisted that she marry James A. Scuddy 7 Apr 1913 in Bell Co.,Tx. Lucy was born the next year. They seperated and 2 years later a divorce was arranged by the Smithwicks in San Saba, Tx. Bertha Smithwick that owned the hotel where Julia worked and she had a sister (Effie??) that couldnt have children and they wanted her to give them the child. My Grandmother refused. A trick was devised to have Julia go to the next town on errands and when she returned, her little girl had been stolen. The Smithwicks told her that Effie (the childless sister) and her husband had taken her to Alabama, they didnt know where. This was in December of 1916, Julia was only 16 years old, now jobless, homeless, destitute, alone and friendless she had no way to search for her baby. A few years later,(as soon as Julia remarried and had some money to seach with) she came back to San Saba to search for her child. The Smithwicks told her that Lucy's name had been changed and that she had died. In 1980 I found a request for a birth certificate for Lucy in Belfalls, Tx that was filed on 26 Feb 1942, which proves she was NOT dead! Up to this time my Grandmother had grieved over the death of this child for over 60 years!! I was given false information several times while searching for Lucy over the span of 20 years. The lies and deception were endless. My Grandmother passed away in 1985 still hoping I could locate her.
If anyone has any information on her please email me at [email protected] Lucy, if you read this, please know that your Mother loved you very deeply, regardless of what you were told. You have a large family here in Texas that loves you and we are definitely not destitute and helpless as your poor Mother was so many years ago.
