The identity of John Searcy (b. about 1786)'s wife Martha is most likely Martha Langdon, the daughter of James Langdon (b. about 1755, d. November, 1835) and his first wife Patty Stephenson (b. about 1755-1760, d. before 1815) of Johnston County, NC.
The parentage and place of birth of James Langdon is unknown, although family traditions passed down through his son Britton Langdon's descendants allege that he was illegitimate. He is referred to as "son-in-law" [i.e. stepson] in the 1800 will of William Messer of Johnston County, suggesting that Messer's then wife Elizabeth may have been his mother.James Langdon married Patty Stephenson (or Stevenson), daughter of Solomon Stephenson, Sr. and his wife Sarah, on September 13, 1778 in Johnston County, NC.Solomon Stephenson, Sr., son of John Stephenson and wife Katherine Wiggs, had first settled in Johnston County, NC about 1766, having come from Southampton County, VA.Prior to 1815, James Langdon and a number of his children left Johnston County and were residing in Montgomery County, NC, where James married his second wife Catherine Beaman. In the 1820s, various members of the Langdon and Beaman families migrated to Indiana, settling in Owen County.James Langdon died in Owen County, Indiana in November, 1835.In 1855, his widow Catherine (Beaman) Langdon applied for a Bounty Land Warrant based upon the Revolutionary War service of her late husband James Langdon (BLW #52778-160-55).
On November 20, 1820, Elizabeth Barber, Winifred Beaman, Sarah Beaman, MARTHA SEARCY, Zachariah Langdon, Britton Langdon, Mary Beaman, Edith Langdon, and Nancy Langdon of Johnston, Cumberland [now Harnett], Montgomery, and Burke Counties, NC [the children of James Langdon] conveyed two tracts of land in Johnston County. The first tract consisted of 50 acres on the south side of Black Creek in Johnston County, NC to William Godwin. The second conveyance was for a tract of unspecified acreage on the north side of Black Creek in Johnston County, NC to their uncle, James Stephenson (Johnston County, NC Deed Book L-2, pp. 252, 265).
John and Martha Searcy's son James Searcy was probably named for his grandfather James Langdon, and their son Britton Searcy was undoubtedly named after his uncle Britton Langdon.
Britton Langdon (b. September 7, 1792 d. before January 29, 1876; md. November 7, 1815, Margaret "Peggy" Carrell; 2md. August 5, 1836, Winifred H. Jordan) of Johnston County, NC is my direct ancestor.
