Hi John, Covington/Coventon Searles in 1789 Beaufort NC witnessed the will of Wilson Moore (Wilson Moore named wife Martha, children George, Edward, Jane, friend Thomas Smith). Witnesses were Thomas Jones, David Dunn, Coventon Searles. Is this the same Covington Searles son of Thomas? I'm trying to figure out this David Dunn and his Searles link. Some background information is below. The Searles were all around in Beaufort and in Craven NC too. Thanks, Gary
In 1770 Craven NC, David Dunn had a child with Mary Searles (bastardy bond). This David Dunn is apparently the one who died 3 Mar - 7 Apr 1785 Craven NC (wife Katherine Franck, dtrs Penelope, Mary, Sidney, son David, says hire out Negroes for schooling and maintaining children until son David is 21 or married). This David dec'd 1785 was a son of David Dunn dec'd 1768 Craven NC and wife Elizabeth Dep. In Dec 1785, a younger David Dunn buys Ned from the estate of William Custis and Thomas Custis buys Rose and child from the estate. Ann Custis had been a previous wife of David Dunn dec'd 1785, and Ned was mentioned in David Dunn's will although apparently reverting to the Custis sibling after his death. Rose had belonged to Ann Custis Dunn (apparently she died between 1782 and 1783 when David Dunn married Katherine Franck).
